In my sales tip yesterday, I talked about the importance of being consistent and relevant in your efforts to keep in touch with the prospect over the course of several months.
Today, let’s talk about the bold voicemail you want to leave.
First, the bold tone …
You can go all business or lean toward familiarity. There is no wrong answer. Personally, I like to use a singsongy voice that screams, “You already know me. We are already friends.” The message I might leave is, “Oh hi, Allison. This is Bill Farquharson calling again … ”
My goal is to be different, friendly, and give them a taste of what kind of relationship we are going to have. If voicemail is an audition, which it is, this is my Whitman’s Sampler.
If my brother Andy was the author of this blog, he would disagree. His preference was what I used to call his “Andrew J. Farquharson” voice. It was stiff and all business. Given his success, I will not call that approach wrong. I just wouldn’t do it that way.
And second, the bold message …
The last thing I want to be is boring in the words I use in my voicemail message. To the contrary, I believe in being confident, walking right up to the line that reads, “cocky,” before taking a step back.
For example …
“Oh hi, Allison. This is Bill Farquharson calling again. I have left you three voicemails now. How many people leave you three voicemails, Allison? I hope this demonstrates my strong desire to work with you. Just imagine how hard I will work when you become a client!”
That is absolutely, 100%, a message I would leave. It’s bold and brash and memorable. Is it for you? Maybe. Maybe not. I like the idea of erring on the side of aggression.
Where the line between tame and bold lies is up to you. If what you’re doing is working, keep doing it. If not, take a walk on the wild side.
