Overall, I consider ADD to be a blessing in my life. But it wasn't always that way.
For those of you with a clear head (read: ADD-free), it's like having someone sitting on your shoulder, tapping a finger against your head, and talking to you in a low tone.
Every.
Waking.
Moment.
That's what ADD feels like.
But, since you have always been this way, you think it’s normal. You think everyone has this same thing going on.
Once someone puts a label to it and explains the symptoms, you deal with it. But medication can only take you so far.
You learn to embrace the power of ADD by listening to that inner voice carrying on a separate, constant conversation. Every once in a while, it says something intelligent.
You learn to tame your ADD by mindfully and purposely spending a few minutes just breathing prior to an important event or whenever your head is bombarded by a barrage of thoughts all at once. That is the best way I have found to quiet the voice. It requires practice, but stick with it.
If you have even the inkling of, “I think there is something wrong with me,” get yourself checked out. I vividly recall the impact of the ADD med I was put on. It reminded me of the first time I put on a pair of glasses and was shocked by the details of the leaves on a tree.
What you will learn is there is an upside to constant chatter. Learn to control it and ADD becomes your superpower.
Watch out, Marvel.
