I got into printing in high school. I did a tech center open house and got to use a screen printing press. I loved the hands on concept of the work we were doing and the versatility of the industry. I haven’t looked back since I made it into that program.
I am 20 years old and I am now a student at Ferris State University studying Graphic Communications and Graphic Media Management. I am pursuing a business degree and a printing degree with these programs. I get to learn about the prepress, production, and post-press processes along with different marketing, business, and management topics. I am also the vice president of the Graphic Arts Association (GAA) at Ferris. GAA is a student run organization focused on printing. We do company tours, have companies come to Ferris and give presentations, and we do other trips as well. We are very involved in the Print Excellence Awards and many of our students are gold and silver award winners. We have also been to PRINTING United Expo and Dscoop Edge. We love to network and try to help our students learn important skills to help them in the future.
I love the printing industry and want to learn everything I can. I started out in production and I have loved every minute of it, but I now have progressed to learning more about the front end of things. I want to learn customer service, marketing, and what it takes to build a company.
With this blog series, I would like to share my perspective on the printing industry. I want to help others in the industry understand how people around my age approach different topics. I hope that my perspective can help others, as well as teach me more about the industry. With that said, my perspective doesn’t speak for every student interested in printing, but I hope that the information is beneficial.
