No one can tell you what those first few weeks as a new parent is like. You just have to experience it yourself in order to understand. Everything you do seems wrong and you spend a lot of time wondering, "Is this normal?"
New salespeople experienced the same thing. Without any kind of comparison, they have no way of knowing whether or not their actions, efforts, and especially results are typical.
Regardless of whether you are their boss or coworker, you can be of assistance.
Tell them that it's normal to be frustrated. Talk about how things were for you.
Tell them that it's normal that no one returns phone calls. Remind them that they are still making progress.
Tell them that it's normal to question their career choice. Point out that the best of the best look back and wonder how in the world they ever made it.
If you remember your early days in sales, you will recall how you struggled but it's likely that no one ever pulled you aside the way you should pull your new, young salesperson aside and whisper in their ears, “Congratulations. You’re normal.”
