In ink-jet, output speed and resolution are improving, and, to an extent, so is the cost of the ink—but it faces its own limits. Optimal jetting requires a very runny fluid that can pass through the head without gumming up the works. Once it arrives on the paper, though, fluid causes problems with penetration, cockling and the need to apply significant heat—and therefore energy—to remove it.
