With the number of schools offering programs focusing on graphic communications dwindling each year, Printing Industries of America (PIA) (Booth 3802) recognizes that it is crucial to support print and graphic communications educators. PIA strives to create opportunities for high-school, technical school, and university professionals to learn about the latest printing industry technology, and share resources and ideas.
PIA, in partnership with NPES - The Association for Suppliers of Printing, Publishing and Converting Technologies (Booth 3255), coordinated the 2017 Educator Experience Event here at PRINT 17. Printing Industries of America and the Graphic Arts Show Company have had a long-standing relationship in delivering informative, practical events that benefit educators in the graphic communications industry.
This one-half day event was coordinated through funding made possible by NPES, owner of PRINT and GRAPH EXPO. It provided industry educators with an opportunity to learn about current trends, see the latest equipment and technology, and network with other instructional professionals.
The event kicked off with an introduction and welcome by NPES Executive Vice President, JudyDurham, CAE, followed by a keynote address by consultant and educator Hal Hinderliter, Principal at Hal Hinderliter Consulting Services. He spoke on the topic of Technology, Pedagogy, and the Graphic Arts. As innovative technologies continue to transform printing and publishing, Hinderliter is aware that incorporating new technology into lesson plans and curriculums can be difficult. He discussed the challenge of positioning emergent practices within our student-centered praxis.
The event sessions also covered new and up-and-coming technologies, a panel discussion, and practical how-to presentations. The information presented is designed to show educators how they can incorporate these concepts, technologies, and ideas in their own classrooms. Other sessions included: Which Skills Do Printers Want Most From New Hires?, How do you Decide Between Digital and Offset?, Top 10 Adobe CC Production Tips, and The Shifting Role of Print. This year’s event was packed with presentations by prominent industry speakers such as Dr. John Leininger, professor at Clemson University; Steven Schnoll, Schnoll Media Consulting; and Joe Marin, Printing Industries of America Vice President of Education and Training.
The 2017 Educator Experience Forum was held on September 10, 2017 at McCormick Place in Chicago, IL, in conjunction with the PRINT 17 show. Registration was free for full- or part-time educators teaching graphic communications, printing, graphic design, or related fields, and included admission to the show floor.
