About Mattie J.T. Stepanek Foundation
The Mattie J.T. Stepanek Foundation is a volunteer-run not-for-profit organization committed to spreading the inspirational message of hope and change offered by the late poet Mattie J.T. Stepanek, who died of a neuromuscular disease at age 13. He was a respected poet and advocate for peace- and disability-related organizations, as well as a New York Times bestselling author, with six volumes of Heartsongs poetry and his Just Peace collection of essays and correspondence with former President Jimmy Carter. Based in Rockville, Maryland, the foundation develops educational and recreational programs and outreach activities for children and adults that encourage peacemaking.
