ABS Graphics Reaps Benefits of Diversification Strategy With IS29 Inkjet UV Press
More than a decade ago, Russ Babka became the CEO of 40-year old ABS Graphics, an Illinois-based company, at a time when many commercial printers were struggling. Babka quickly recognized the importance of shifting the direction of the company to provide more diversification of services, along with creating an environment that fosters a positive customer experience. His vision has led to ABS Graphics serving a client base of high-end retail, financial services and other Fortune 500 companies nationwide, 145 employees and annual sales of approximately $38M.
The company recently invested in Komori’s Impremia IS29 (IS29), a 29˝ sheetfed inkjet UV printing system. It was important to the team at ABS Graphics to partner with a press manufacturer that understands how to fully support the competitive edge the inkjet digital printing system delivers for both commercial print applications and package printing. As a long-time Komori customer, ABS was confident that partnering with Komori on this investment was the right decision.
“When you have been in this industry for more than 30 years like I have, you intuitively know when your business needs to evolve,” said Babka. “It became very clear to us that data was beginning to drive everything. Having cost-effective variable data capabilities today is critical, so we are investing in that direction. We have the capability to manage data for high-end retail and a host of large financial services organizations. Komori’s IS29 fit well within our mission to offer high-quality personalized capabilities, yet to be extremely efficient and competitively priced. With the IS29, we can offer a diverse portfolio of services just like larger providers can, but with a more personal touch.”
The company noted other positives of the IS29 include the fact that the press runs a 23x29˝ sheet, ideal for larger format applications like customized posters, variable data book printing and pocket folders on heavy stock. The substrate freedom of the press, and its ability to provide exact color matching with offset printing, make it possible to produce highly creative branded applications for clients across a variety of media and substrates with greater flexibility.
“Komori’s IS29 expands our capabilities, is extremely efficient and makes it possible to produce quality personalized short-run applications at a reasonable cost,” said Babka. “We couldn’t be happier with this press and what it can offer our customers.”
“The IS29 was designed to deliver the cost-effective versatility that supports ABS Graphics’ reputation for staying ahead of industry demands,” said Mark Milbourn, vice president of sales at Komori America. “We are proud of our continued partnership with this forward-thinking company.”
