Williamson Institute Proves Its Value Once Again
DALLAS—Williamson Printing hosted the third Williamson Institute in February. The educational seminar provided printing knowledge to college students to help enhance their education within the graphic communications industry. Fifty students representing Southern Methodist University, Texas Christian University, the University of North Texas and Baylor University attended the seminar.
CALIFORNIA
ANAHEIM—Pacific West Litho has installed a new six-color, 40˝ Komori Lithrone press equipped with a ColorCommand temperature control/cooling system from TriService.
AZUSA—A Steinemann Topspot 102 blanket coater has replaced two silk screen UV coaters at Classic Coating & Laminating.
COMMERCE—The transition to a computer-to-plate workflow is complete at Media Lithographics after the purchase of a complete Fujifilm CTP workflow system, centered on the Javelin Luxel T9000 CTP thermal platesetter and supported by Fujifilm's Celebrant RIP, C-550 flatbed scanner, PictroProof and PreProofer 2000.
COLORADO
ENGLEWOOD—Mail-Well Inc. has been named by Fortune magazine as one of the 200 most admired companies in America. Mail-Well was ranked first in the printing industry category for quality of management. The company boasts 15,000 employees and more than 140 printing facilities.
FLORIDA
MIAMI—Miami Offset Printers has announced it has purchased a five-color Heidelberg M-1000B web press. The company is expanding into heatset printing, with the goal of printing magazines, inserts and other commercial printing for customers in the South Florida area. The new Heidelberg press will be accompanied by the installation of a saddle binder and a perfect binder. Also, the company will now be doing business as Platinum Printing.
GEORGIA
STATESBORO—Georgia Southern University is expanding its print education program by offering a wide range of new training programs to the printing industry. The Southeastern Comprehensive Opportunities in Printing Education (SCOPE) uses state-of-the-art instructional technology to offer "any kind, anytime, anywhere" learning for printing employees.
TUCKER—Heidelberg USA and Sir Speedy have initiated a collaborative research and development effort. Heidelberg's digital color production press, the NexPress 2100, will be installed at select Sir Speedy centers nationwide for on-the-job trials and qualification. The Sir Speedy center based here is the first to receive the machine.
ILLINOIS
CHICAGO—A new 74 Karat digital press from KBA North America, Sheetfed Div., has been installed at CrossTech Communications.
INDIANA
MILFORD—The Papers Inc. has installed an automated vertical stacker bundler system from Systems Technology Inc. (STI) at its new 57,000-square-foot printing plant. The unit complements the company's newly installed MAN Roland Cromoman web offset press. The system includes a signature conveyor system, a STI Model 195A automated vertical stacker bundler and a STI LoadBuilder automatic bundle palletizer.
NEW YORK
BRENTWOOD, NY—TSO General Corp. has purchased a six-color, 40˝ Mitsubishi Model 3F-13 press with tower coater and extended delivery.
NEW YORK CITY—Brita Litho has partnered with The Bravest Fund, a charity established by the three N.Y. firefighters depicted in the famous WTC photograph of the American flag being raised amidst the rubble of the Trade Center, and The North Jersey Media Group to produce reproductions of the "Ground Zero" poster for sale to the public. A substantial portion of the proceeds will go directly to assist firefighters, police officers, emergency service workers and their families affected by the September 11 tragedy.
PLAINVIEW—First Impressions Lithographic has competed its transition to a totally digital prepress department with the addition of an Agfa Galileo platesetter. The unit resides in a new climate-controlled cleanroom with the company's Agfa Sherpa ink-jet proofer and Polaroid Prediction contract proofing system.
OHIO
DAYTON—Fleet Graphics has purchased a Screen (USA) PlateRite 8000 thermal CTP device for its prepress department. Fleet Graphics employs nine people at its 5,000-square-foot facility.
DUBLIN—Vincent Graphics Direct recently signed a deal with xpedx and Creo for a new computer-to-plate system. A PDF-based workflow, with Internet-based, real-time proofing, is also being incorporated.
RHODE ISLAND
LINCOLN—New England Printing & Graphics has completed the installation of a Creo computer-to-plate system. This $400,000 technology investment includes a new Dell server, Brisque 4 RIP and workflow, Spectrum digital halftone proofing, an Iris 43 wide digital Dylux proofer and a Creo Trendsetter platesetter.
TEXAS
AUSTIN—PrintGlobe Inc. has inked a deal with Britain's printing.com to redirect U.S. customers visiting the printing.com URL to the PrintGlobe Website.
WASHINGTON
MALO—A new MBO B26S-C folder and banding unit have been installed at Light Bearers Ministry, reports Bob Nehler, publishing manager.
