CALIFORNIA
GARDENA—L.A. Press is up-and-running with a new six-color, 40˝ Mitsubishi Model 3F-13 sheetfed press.
IRVINE—Orange County Printing has installed a six-color, 40˝ Komori Lithrone press outfitted with a Tri-Service ColorCommand temperature control/cooling system.
VAN NUYS—The installation of the Sentinel ink management system from Accel Graphic Systems is complete at Great Western Litho. The ink management system is now equipped on a Komori Lithrone 640 press purchased at PRINT 01.
CONNECTICUT
MERIDEN—Three former shareholders of Vision Graphics have joined commercial printer Miller-Johnson Inc. They are Tom Mitchell, Andrew Mitchell and Erik Mitchell. The transaction was initiated on Miller-Johnson's behalf by Rampart Associates LLC.
FLORIDA
HOLLYWOOD—Edward H. Owen, 79, died on March 11. With over 50 years experience in the newspaper industry, he was a former editor of various newspaper production magazines and was an international correspondent for several different industry trade journals. Owen was a life member of the Cleveland Club of Printing House Craftsmen. He was an Alumnus of the Year award winner from the Rochester Institute of Technology and a member of the board of directors of the Association of Graphic Art Consultants. He also received two Golden Keys awards from the Printing Industries of America.
ILLINOIS
CAROL STREAM—Berlin Industries has installed the world's first MasterFlo Four Out Deserter on a Heidelberg M-2000 web press. This Deserter receives a single shingled stream of four identical half-fold copies, each nested inside the other, running at up to 60,000 copies per hour from a PressTech folder. This results in four separate single shingle streams ready for trimming/stacking.
NILES—The Argus Press has added a new 5,700-square-foot facility dedicated to bindery and fulfillment production. Adjacent to its main facility, this additional plant will expand Argus' current fulfillment, pick-and-pack, stitching, folding and other finishing operations.
Universal Press, also of Niles, has installed a six-color, 40˝ Komori Lithrone press. It is outfitted with a TriService ColorCommand temperature control/cooling system and custom accessory shelving work surface on the press' gear side.
KENTUCKY
NEWPORT—Multi-Craft Litho has made a move from film to computer-to-plate, retiring its Screen DT-R3100 eight-page imagesetter in favor of a Screen PlateRite 8000 thermal CTP eight-page platesetter. The family owned company has been in business since 1955.
MASSACHUSETTS
CHICOPEE—The Pond-Ekberg Co., a commercial printer and finisher, has installed a new six-color, 41˝ KBA Rapida 105 sheetfed press with in-line aqueous coating. The press was installed in January and is equipped with semi-automatic plate changers, CIP3/4 digital interface, automatic blanket and roller washers, and the KBA closed-loop spectrophotometry system. Jonathan Kratovil, company president, says Pond-Ekberg decided to go ahead with the purchase despite the economic slowdown in 2001, and expects the purchase will give the company an advantage over its competition when the economy makes a turnaround.
MICHIGAN
ANN ARBOR—Book printing specialist Malloy Lithographing has changed its name to Malloy Inc. It has also adopted the tag line "Serving publishers with integrity and innovation."
MINNESOTA
ALBERT LEA, MN—A Standard Horizon AFC-504AKT automated floor model folder is now operating at Church Offset Printing.
NEVADA
RENO—Registered Ink Printing has acquired a new five-color Heidelberg Speedmaster 52 perfecting press with coater. The printer has also purchased a Polar 92ED cutter and was scheduled to install a complete Heidelberg computer-to-plate package in March.
NEW HAMPSHIRE
CONCORD—A new seven-color, 64˝ KBA Rapida 162 sheetfed press with perfector and in-line aqueous coater has been purchased by Concord Litho. The new press is loaded with semi-automatic plate changers; CIP3 digital interface; automatic blanket, plate, impression and roller washing; and a KBA closed-loop densitometry system. The press was delivered to the 200-employee company in April.
NEW JERSEY
BOONTON TOWNSHIP—Jon Parker and several key employees of Parker Communications Group (PCG) have become part of Dolan Wohlers, a commercial sheetfed and web printing company. The transaction was initiated on Dolan Wohlers' behalf by Rampart Associates LLC.
FORKED RIVER—Regal-Lith Printers has installed a new Presstek CTP system complete with Nexus workflow and Epson 10000 color proofing. The prepress workflow also sends CIP3 digital files to the console of its new six-color Heidelberg Speedmaster press with aqueous coater. These improvements are part of a $2 million expansion into the color print market for the 15-year-old family owned company.
LAFAYETTE—A new six-color, 40˝ Mitsubishi 3F-13 sheetfed press has been installed at The Printing Center. The machine is equipped with an aqueous tower coater and extended delivery.
NEW YORK
LONG ISLAND CITY—Continental Corporate Engravers has acquired Lincoln Mounting & Finishing, a Brooklyn-based finishing company serving the printing trade. The companies' combined capabilities add mounting and expanded diecutting capabilities to other specialties, including engraving, embossing, foil stamping, hand and machine finishing, and letterpress printing.
NEW YORK CITY—Aladdin Laminating has added a new MBO folder with right angle section, a 54˝ Colter & Peterson Saber guillotine cutter and an Autofeeds rigid film laminator to its equipment list.
NORTH CAROLINA
GREENSBORO—Shamrock Corp. has purchased a Prime UV multiple lamp system. The 600-watt-per-inch system was installed on an H.B. Weber flexo stack press to cure personalized bar codes on gift wrap paper. By doing this in-line, it has allowed Shamrock to have longer runs on its gravure presses with fewer stops and changeovers.
PENNSYLVANIA
SEWICKLEY—The Graphic Arts Technical Foundation (GATF) has cleared the decks in its research and training facility to make way for a new four-unit Rotoman web offset press, donated by MAN Roland. The press is expected to be operational by early summer.
TEXAS
DALLAS—Padgett Printing has invested in an eight-color Heidelberg Speedmaster SM 102-8P perfecting press via Heidelberg's used equipment division. President and CEO David Torok reports this equipment addition will help with the company's move to mailing and fulfillment. This investment follows the purchase of two new Heidelberg Digimaster 9110s earlier this year.
VIRGINIA
RICHMOND—Carter Printing has expanded its production capacity by installing a six-color, 40˝ Mitsubishi Model 3F-13 sheetfed press with tower coater and extended delivery. It replaced a 25-year-old four-color machine.
WISCONSIN
APPLETON—A TriService ColorCommand temperature control/cooling system is now providing chilling for a Nordson/Spectral UV lamp system on a six-color, 40˝ Komori Lithrone press at National Graphics Solutions.
RACINE—Warren Industries has purchased two Itoh RC-DX Model 115 paper cutters in the past year. LDR International provided the proposal through Best Graphics for the installations. Warren Industries specializes in the production of game cards for board games.
