BURBANK—California Coast Color has added a four-color, 40˝ Mitsubishi Diamond 3000S sheetfed press. It is the second Mitsubishi for the 12,500-square-foot shop with 20 employees.
COSTA MESA—Hoover Printing & Lithography is now operating its newly installed, six-color HP Indigo digital press.
SAN LUIS OBISPO—Herschel "Hank" Apfelberg, longtime professor of graphic communication at Cal Poly, died January 13 at Stanford University Hospital at the age of 67. Mr. Apfelberg started his career as a linotype operator/compositor. Before coming to Cal Poly, where he taught from 1971 to 2001, he worked as a process engineer and rotogravure administrator for American Can and as printing superintendent for Equitable Bag in New York.

NEW CASTLE—EnvelopeAmerica recently moved to a larger facility, twice the size as the previous, to enable the company to increase its capacity. Since the move, the company has purchased three new Halm Jet offset presses.

CHARLOTTE HARBOR—Sun Coast Media Group has purchased two DGM 850 additions from Dauphin Graphic Machines. Sun Coast Media prints the Charlotte Sun, a daily newspaper with Monday through Saturday circulation of 35,332 copies, and an average paid circulation for Sunday of 38,041. Sun Coast Media is in the third year of a five-year press growth plan, and will reportedly add more DGM units to the existing line within the next two years.
MIAMI—Solo Printing has beefed up its bindery by installing a Muller Martini Bravo-T saddle stitching system.

ADDISON—ASI Mailing & Fulfillment reports that it has moved into a new facility that is triple the size of its previous building.
ELGIN—Hagg Press has added a Muller Martini AmigoPlus perfect binding system to its full-service bindery. The Chicagoland company will marry its new AmigoPlus to an existing 16-pocket collator. The combination will enable it to handle soft-cover book jobs ranging up to 20,000 pieces.
WILLOWBROOK—RR Donnelley Logistics has earned a five-year contract from LaSalle Bank to manage the delivery of check deposits and mail for processing between all of the bank's 140 area branches and three operating sites. This is the second five-year contract that LaSalle Bank has awarded to RR Donnelley Logistics since the companies first began working together in 1998.

MANKATO—South Central Technical College recently purchased a four-color Hamada B452AI press from distributor Best Graphics.
RED WING—River Town Publishing has purchased a DGM 430 four-high addition to its existing press line. River Town Publishing is owned by Forum Communications, and prints the Republican Eagle, a daily newspaper, as well as 35 other publications.

VORHEES—A.F.L. Web Printing has purchased two DGM four-high units. The presses are to be used as add-ons to existing press lines. A.F.L. prints weekly and monthly news-papers, as well as trade publications. Dailies include the Philadelphia Metro with 160,000+ copies, and Women's Wear Daily, at 55,000 copies.

BUFFALO—Digicon Imaging, a full-service visual communications company based here, has acquired Creative Printing, located in Endwell, NY. Creative Printing is a printer and fulfillment services company with a 40-year history. Digicon now has approximately 100 employees and offers a full range of visual communications services to more than 400 clients nationally. Its services include high-quality lithographic printing, digital photography, design, prepress and fulfillment.
MACEDON—Cory Printing & Packaging, based here, has purchased the assets of Matrix Unlimited, of Rochester. The new graphics division will operate as Cory Graphics in the Rochester facility.
RONKONKOMA, NY—Ocean Printing has installed a new Mitsubishi Diamond 3000R convertible sheetfed perfector. The highly automated, 40˝ press has six printing units and an aqueous coater.

GASTONIA—Total Print Services recently installed Heidelberg's Prinance professional management information system to provide workflow management at the start-up shop.
LUMBERTON—KBA North America has presented Graphic Packaging with a hand-made replica of its new eight-color, 64˝ Rapida 162 sheetfed perfector with coater and extended delivery. The new press at Graphic Packaging was KBA's 500th order for a large-format sheetfed press.

CHALFONT—Vertis, a provider of targeted advertising, media, and marketing services, announced that OSHA recertified the facility's Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) as a STAR (Safety Through Accountability and Recognition) site in January 2004.
SHARON—Victor Printing has updated its prepress department with the installation of all new Dell servers, a Screen PlateRite 4300 CTP system and an upgraded Agfa Apogee workflow system.

NASHVILLE—A new seven-color, 41˝ KBA Rapida 105 sheetfed press with a coater and extended delivery and a perfector between the first and second printing unit is now in operation at Marshall & Bruce Printing. The press was installed in the firm's 58,000-square-foot facility in November.

AUSTIN—CSI has added a new 10-color Heidelberg Speedmaster SM102 press with perfecting. Established in 1939, the company boasts sales of $30 million and has more than 160 employees.
DALLAS—The Color Place has installed two new Scitex Vision XLjet+ large-format printers at its facility here.

WALLA WALLA—After increasing its annual sales twofold over the last four years, commercial and specialty printer ColorPress has added a six-color ROLAND 300 to its pressroom, complete with PECOM automation and an anilox coater. Installation of the 29˝, six-up press was completed over the holidays.

MILWAUKEE—Visual Systems Inc. (VSI) recently announced the establishment of a new book components division. The new division will offer customers access to a wide array of printing techniques such as Hexachrome, lenticular and metallics.
SUSSEX—Quad/Graphics has earned "chain-of-custody" certification from the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), an international non-profit organization devoted to encouraging responsible management of the world's forests. Quad/Graphics clients may now choose to use FSC-certified paper and the FSC-trademarked "checkmark and tree" logo in their magazines, catalogs and other printed materials. The FSC logo lets consumers know that the paper was made using wood from a healthy, well-managed forest.
