TUSCALOOSA—Printing Services at the University of Alabama has purchased a Presto saddle stitching system from Muller Martini to expand its full-service finishing capabilities.

HIALEAH—Franklin/Trade Graphics recently held an open house to celebrate the one-year anniversary of the merger of Franklin Graphics, Trade Litho and Little River Press. About 200 guests got a look at the company's two new six-color, 40˝ sheetfed presses—a Mitsubishi 3F-13 and Mitsubishi Diamond 3000LS. Among the special guests at the open house were Stanley C. Panther, mascot of the Florida Panthers hockey team, and Billy the Marlin, mascot of the Florida Marlins baseball team.
MIAMI—Solo Printing has bolstered its finishing department with the acquisition of a B32-S MBO Perfection folder with a BA 700 in-line bander, as well as a Muller Martini Bravo Plus saddle stitcher with in-line stacker.

CARROLLTON—Folding carton manufacturer Printed Specialties has installed a new Agfa Galileo CTP device, driven by an Artwork Systems Nexus RIP with Powerstepper/Powerlayout for imposition.
WARE COUNTY—The Waycross Journal-Herald has ordered a Goss Community press for production of its daily title of the same name. The new press will include a four-high tower with 40˝ web width—the first Community 3x1 tower of its kind. As well as producing the 11,500 copies of Waycross Journal-Herald six days per week, the new Goss Community will handle a number of existing contract print jobs. The new Community will replace a 42-year-old Goss press, which was converted from letterpress 29 years ago.

CHICAGO—Black Dot Group is marking its 40th anniversary. It was founded in 1963 as a composition and prepress service for book, catalog and collateral clients. Revenues in fiscal 2002 were more then $146 million.

WOBURN—Seaboard Bindery has embarked on a $40,000 work force training program designed to improve the company's manufacturing methods. Seaboard was awarded a $20,000 grant through the Work Force Training Fund, administered by the state Division of Employment and Training, which was matched dollar for dollar by the company.

ELMWOOD PARK—Elmwood Press has purchased a two-color Heidelberg Speedmaster 52 perfecting press and a Heidelberg Prosetter 52 CTP system.
MOORESTOWN—Cardinal Health, a provider of products and services supporting the healthcare industry, announced the addition of direct-to-consumer marketing and patient information printing capabilities, including a KBA Karat digital sheetfed press and a six-color, 40˝ KBA Rapida sheetfed press. The additional services enable Cardinal Health to provide pamphlets, brochures, pocket folders and bound books to pharmaceutical companies.
VOORHEES—With a new contract to print more than 50,000 copies of Women's Wear Daily, a daily international fashion newspaper owned by Fairchild, AFL Web Printing has more than doubled the size of its Heidelberg Mercury press. The company added 36 new printing couples, giving the press a total of 68 couples configured within 11 towers. AFL Web Printing installed the original Mercury with 24 printing couples and two JF-35 jaw folders in 1996. It produces 900 different titles annually for nearly 300 publishers.

LEXINGTON—SURE Copy Centre received the Intercultural Ambassador Award recently. It assisted many Hispanic business owners with their print needs for the Hispanic Heritage Festival events in September. Assistance with banners, brochures, business cards and creation of 300 miniature candy bar wrappers was given. The owners, Gloria and Angel Mejias, are Puerto Rican and have attended the Hispanic festival for many years.

WAUKESHA—Commercial printer J.B. Kenehan Inc. has installed WPC closed-loop color controls on its new five-unit Heidelberg web press. Kodak Approval and Epson 10000 digital color proofing systems have also been added to the prepress area.
