Windy City Printer Upgrades Bindery
CHICAGO—Schiele Graphics, a member of the Schiele Group, has purchased a Duplo System 4000 collator bookletmaker from Best Graphics. John Schiele, president, says that what got him excited about the machine was its ability to perform "intelligent collating," an add-on computer and software system that enables complex collating functions involving multiple components.

MONTGOMERY—Davis Printing has reportedly become the first printer in the state to employ FM screening. Creo's Prinergy workflow, two Intigris 800 proofers and a Trendsetter 800 Quantam are being used to produce 20 micron Staccato screening. The company plans to produce 90 percent of its products using Staccato.

CARSON—Sumi Printing & Binding has acquired a Xerox DocuColor iGen3 digital production press. The new press and the full range of Sumi's printing, packaging and binding services were showcased to customers and prospects at an invitation-only open house at the firm's nine-month-old, 30,000-square-foot facility in June.
Rancho Cucamonga—KBA North America has presented Faust Printing with a hand-made replica of its six-color, 41˝ Rapida 105 press that was installed in July of 2002.
SAN LUIS OBISPO—Cal Poly's Graphic Communication department recently enhanced the quality of its digital printing and imaging education to students, thanks to contributions from Xerox Corp. and Electronics for Imaging (EFI). Xerox donated a DocuColor 2060 digital printing system, and EFI donated the raster image processor (RIP) for the press. The RIP is a Fiery EX 2000.

SAINT PETERSBURG—The St. Petersburg Times has purchased four in-line VCP Vision PunchBending systems from NELA Ternes to work with new tool-less plate lockups for three 21-unit Goss Metroliner presses.

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS—RT & Associates has installed its second NexPress 2100 digital color press.
CAROL STREAM—Digital printer Copresco has expanded its index tabbing operations with the installation of a second Scott diecutting and laminating system and new edge reinforcing equipment. The company has also installed a Standard Horizon BQ-270 perfect binding system, pairing it with an HT-70 three-knife trimmer.
TINLEY PARK—A new five-color Komori Lithrone 28 is now in operation at Force Enterprises.

KANSAS CITY—Children International, a non-profit organization based here, has installed a new six-color, 41˝ KBA Rapida 105 sheetfed press. The press replaces a four-color, 38˝ Miller sheetfed perfector in use since 1967.

CONCORD—Press manufacturer KBA North America has presented Concord Litho, a 200-employee commercial printer, with a hand-made replica of its new seven-color, 64˝ KBA Rapida 162 sheetfed press with perfector and in-line aqueous coater.

CLIFTON—E&M Bindery reports it has purchased the assets of S&F Die Cutting. Included in the transaction were three automatic Bobst diecutters, high-speed folding and gluing gear, and laminating equipment.
Mahwah—Ramsey Press has equipped its new and expanded 30,000- square-foot facility with a Presto saddle stitcher from Muller Martini.
TRENTON—Quebecor World's Trenton Mailing Center has been authorized by the U.S. Postal Service to participate in the new Periodical Co-palletization Program. Quebecor World reportedly is the first company to be granted authorization by the USPS for this new program. Participation in this program results in additional postage discounts for mail pieces that migrate from sack to pallet containers. Presently, Quebecor World's Trenton Mailing Center co-mails over 80 publications and supplemental mailings.

COMMACK—Coral Color Process has transitioned to computer-to-plate production, opting for the PlateRite 8000 thermal CTP platesetter from Screen (USA). The company has also upgraded its pressroom with the addition of an eight-color, 40˝ Mitsubishi Diamond 3000LS—the firm's third Mitsubishi press.
LONG ISLAND CITY—Recently, J&M Finishing purchased a Bobst SP Evoline 102-E autoplatten diecutter and a Media 100-II A1 folder/gluer.
Wallkill—The Watchtower Society of the Jehovah's Witnesses has ordered a completely integrated hard cover book production line for installation in a new addition to the facility that is being constructed here. The solution is anchored by Muller Martini's Corona adhesive binding system and a pair of the company's Diamant hard cover casing-in lines.

TULSA—Alco Laminations, a 27-year-old graphic finisher, has changed its name to alco print finishers. Although known for its expertise in a variety of film laminating processes, the company will concentrate on providing a wider variety of services, including UV coating, mounting for displays, diecutting and folding/gluing.

Mayfield—The P.A. Hutchison Co. is now producing perfect bound books on a new AmigoPlus from Muller Martini. The P.A. Hutchison Co. is a family owned, privately-held corporation serving book publishers and commercial accounts.
OLD FORGE—Penn Creative Litho has expanded its operations with the addition of a five-color, 20x29.5˝ MAN Miller perfecting press and a Konica 8031 digital color press.
PHILADELPHIA—Mail-Well Graphics Philadelphia recently held a plant tour for local third-grade students, which included a demonstration of the entire printing process. The children were all given a carry bag, stress ball and "gold" pen to take home with them.

CHAPIN—The FB Johnston Group printing facility here has met the requirements for the ISO 9001:2000 standard, according to Quality Systems Registrars. This certification covers the production of printed products in both sheet and roll form. FB Johnston Plant Manager Laurie Gantt said the certification was achieved primarily through continuous quality improvement efforts.

MORRISTOWN—The Citizen Tribune has installed a new Muller Martini Minuteman in its mailroom for the production of saddle stitched products. The Citizen Tribune is a local daily newspaper serving the Lakeway region of East Tennessee.
NASHVILLE—The Font Shop, which started more than 19 years ago offering prepress and typesetting services, has changed its name to TFS Graphics. The name change is designed to reflect the company's transformation into digital printing.

ARLINGTON—DFW Suburban Newspapers, serving readers in the Dallas-Fort Worth region, has installed a BravoPlus TV saddle stitching system by Muller Martini. The TV model is specially configured to speed the production of television guides printed by and distributed with newspapers.
DALLAS—Great Western Industries is now operating a new six-color Komori Lithrone S40.

LITTLE CHUTE—JP Graphics was selected as the Small Business of the Year for 2003 in the manufacturing category by the Fox Cities Chamber of Commerce. Rodney Stoffel, JP Graphics' president, was presented the award.
MILWAUKEE—The Schawk Inc. rotogravure engraving plant here has purchased new adapter-less MDC Daetwyler gravure cylinder plating equipment. It is said to be the world's first installation of a plating system designed with DisCoP technology.
WAUKESHA—J.B. Kenehan Inc. has broken ground on a 20,000-square- foot addition. A new Heidelberg ST400 stitcher with three- and five-knife trimmer, in-line calendar punch and camera signature recognition system will be installed in the new building.
