PHOENIX—In celebration of its recent 30th anniversary, Cereus Graphics held an open house in March. Drawing a crowd of more than 250 designers and marketing communications professionals, the event provided the company with the opportunity to demonstrate its new six-color Komori Lithrone S40 sheetfed press and its new seven-color HP Indigo digital press. Upon arriving, guests were asked to sign an electronic "guest book." This data was fed directly into the HP Indigo press. Five minutes later, guests were presented a set of four personalized poster calendars, each with different imagery and colors.

AUBURN—A new five-color Komori Lithrone 28 has been installed at Auburn Printers.
OXNARD—Custom Printing has increased the level of its recycling activities as part of the company's Green Project. Charles Utts, director of sales, reports that Custom Printing now recycles more than 40,000 pounds of paper per month, in addition to recycling all aluminum plates and recovering silver from its film developing process. The shop also packages and returns delivery pallets to suppliers.

FORT LAUDERDALE—The Sun-Sentinel reportedly is the third major newspaper in the industry to utilize collation for its Sunday FSIs. The Prim Hall FSI packaging system will be in operation by this summer and will assemble packages for the entire Sunday circulation. The packages will be stacked, palletized and sent to the field, where they will be combined with the remaining sections of the paper.

ELK GROVE VILLAGE—Wallace Bruce Offset has announced the addition of an eight-color, 40˝ Heidelberg Speedmaster CD 102-8-LX UV press and a 61˝ Polar 155 cutter.
RIVER GROVE—Officials at Triton College announced that the school's graphic arts printing program is in danger of being drastically cut. Without additional support and increased attendance, the advanced sheetfed and web press classes will be eliminated, warns Ron Hawks, a member of Triton's advisory group and former instructor.

LOUISVILLE—A new six-color, 41˝ KBA Rapida 105 sheetfed press has been installed at The Merrick Printing Co. The press features a perfector after the second unit, allowing either two-over-four printing or straight six-color printing. It also features an automated make-ready system, along with tower coater and extended delivery.

ROCKVILLE—A six-color Heidelberg Speedmaster CD sheetfed press is now running at EU Services, a full-service direct mail production facility with more than 350 employees.

HOLLAND—Packaging and commercial printing company The SVH Group has signed a deal to implement "THE System" from CRC Information Systems. The SVH Group will implement a fully integrated software solution including commercial estimating, folding carton estimating and dynamic scheduling modules.

PENNSAUKEN—Four decades of work by paper artist Golda Lewis has been captured in a 40-page publication that pays tribute to the 89-year-old's innovations in the world of art in paper. The limited edition "Golda Lewis: Four Decades of an Artist's Explorations in Paper" was produced by CRW Graphics, based here. It will be distributed to libraries, museums, art galleries and art critics around the world.
WESTVILLE—Jeffrey Werth, production manager at Gateway Graphics, reveals his company has installed a new Heidelberg Speedmaster 72V. It replaces an older Heidelberg MO4, and joins four other Heidelberg presses.

NEW YORK CITY—Hermes Graphics has become the first printer here to acquire and co-link an automated two-color A.B.Dick 9995A-ICS (Ink Control System) press with Ink Volume Setter with a DPM2340 digital platesetter with ScanMaster. It has also invested in an OpenProof proofing system.
ROCHESTER—The Riverside Group, a full-service bindery, was able to skirt a nightmare recently when a truck carrying 137,000 books from a customer split in half the moment it reached the company's loading dock. Working carefully to avoid further damage, The Riverside Group was able to salvage all 22 lots and provide perfect binding and diecutting for the project. A crane was brought in to lift the center of the broken trailer, and the skids were removed using a special fork lift, reports Fred Daubert, company vice president.

PORTLAND—Regence BlueCross BlueShield of Oregon has announced the successful installation of a Ryobi 3404DI press and a Presstek Dimension400 computer-to-plate system. To celebrate its new systems and to show off the new capabilities, Regence BlueCross BlueShield of Oregon hosted an art show and open house in May.
