The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) released the September 2019 Printing-Writing Paper Monthly report on Oct. 16.
According to the report, total printing-writing paper shipments decreased 7% in September compared to September 2018. U.S. purchases of total printing-writing papers decreased 5% in September compared to the same month last year. Total printing-writing paper inventory levels remained essentially flat (-0.5%) when compared to August 2019.
- Uncoated free sheet (UFS) paper shipments decreased 4% compared to September 2018 while the inventory level decreased 1% compared to August 2019. UFS imports increased 5% while exports decreased 3% in August 2019.
- U.S. purchases of coated free sheet (CFS) papers in September decreased 8% compared to last September while the inventory level decreased 4% compared to August 2019. CFS imports and exports both decreased compared to August 2018, down 8% and 10%, respectively.
- Coated mechanical (CM) paper shipments decreased 5% compared to September 2018 while the inventory level increased 8% compared to August 2019. CM imports and exports both decreased compared to August 2018, down 23% and 17%, respectively.
- U.S. purchases of uncoated mechanical (UM) papers in September decreased 11% compared to last September while the inventory level increased 15% compared to August 2019. UM imports decreased 21% while exports increased 2% in August 2019.
