Total Printing-Writing Paper Shipments Down 8% in January Compared to January 2019

The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) today released its January 2020 Printing-Writing Monthly report.
According to the report, total printing-writing paper shipments decreased 8% in January compared to January 2019. U.S. purchases of total printing-writing papers decreased 9% in January compared to the same month last year. Total printing-writing paper inventory levels increased 3% when compared to December 2019.
- Uncoated free sheet (UFS) paper shipments decreased 9% compared to January 2019 while the inventory level increased 2% compared to December 2019. UFS imports decreased 28% while exports increased 41% in December 2019.
- U.S. purchases of coated free sheet (CFS) papers in January decreased 9% compared to last January while the inventory level increased 4% compared to December 2019. CFS imports decreased 31% while exports increased 7% in December 2019.
- Coated mechanical (CM) paper shipments decreased 12% compared to January 2019 while the inventory level increased 9% compared to December 2019. CM imports decreased 27% while exports increased 22% in December 2019.
- U.S. purchases of uncoated mechanical (UM) papers in January decreased 7% compared to last January while the inventory level increased 4% compared to December 2019. UM imports and exports both decreased compared to December 2018, down 20% and 3%, respectively.
