Presstek 52DI® Generates New Era of Growth and Profitability for Odyssey Digital Printing
Mid-size Commercial Printer Increases Business Volume and Capabilities with Presstek Digital Offset Press
HUDSON, NH—August 27, 2007—Presstek, Inc. (Nasdaq: PRST), the leading manufacturer and marketer of digital offset printing business solutions, today announced that Odyssey Digital Printing, a leading Tulsa, Okla.-based provider of printing and finishing services, installed a Presstek 52DI digital offset press to expand its printing capabilities, meet tight turnaround times and improve printing quality.
Odyssey Digital Printing, a 55-person print shop, joins an increasing number of mid-size printers who are adopting Presstek solutions to become more capable, profitable and competitive. With more than 3,000 Direct Imaging (DI®) systems installed worldwide, Presstek provides print shops of all sizes with high-quality, cost-effective, environmentally friendly and easy-to-use digital offset printing solutions.
“We identified a need to boost business volume and bolster our digital printing capabilities,” said John Roberds, founder and president of Odyssey Digital Printing. “We selected Presstek’s 52DI, for its speed, quality, and range of capabilities which allows us to offer our current customers an expanded range of services. The DI has already enabled us to increase our business volume. I was introduced to the DI at a Presstek Open House, and the press’s ability to handle heavy ink coverage, along with its ability to effortlessly print stocks up to 20-point thick, sealed the deal for me. Since implementing the Presstek 52DI, we find ourselves better positioned to do business in an increasingly competitive marketplace.”
Odyssey Digital Printing prints a wide range of materials for its customers, including brochures, newsletters, business cards and retail point-of-purchase (POP) kits. The Presstek 52DI enables Odyssey Digital Printing to print promotional materials for Wal-Mart’s CD/DVD bins six-up on a sheet, as opposed to four-up, as necessary in the past, significantly improving throughput and productivity. In addition to complementing Odyssey Digital Printing’s existing toner-based and super-wide format inkjet printers, the 52DI also integrates seamlessly into the shop’s existing digital workflow, since its advanced quality control and ability to print true-to-life colors facilitate color matching across devices.
“Like a lot of mid-size printers, Odyssey Digital Printing was faced with the challenge of needing to improve its digital printing capabilities while growing its business,” said Emile Tabassi, vice president of North American sales for Presstek. “The 52DI’s efficiency, high-quality, and versatility allow Odyssey Digital Printing to adjust its business model to fit today’s more competitive market while improving profitability.”
Since the introduction of the first Presstek-enabled DI press, Presstek has continued to apply innovative advances to the imaging, plate and press design in DI presses, creating an optimized printing solution that increases quality, while improving speed, reliability and overall price performance.
The latest generation DI press, the Presstek 52DI, delivers a cost per typical page that is on average about half as much per page as that of a comparable job run on high-volume, color, toner-based digital equipment, according to InfoTrends’ U.S. Print On Demand Market Forecast: 2005-2010. The 52DI digital offset press images all four plates simultaneously on-press in precise register and outputs a 16 micron spot with automated support for 300 lpi and FM screening. In addition, it automatically adjusts the amount of ink according to the image on each plate. All of this results in very high-quality output and a makeready time significantly faster than other offset printing processes. File-to-sellable printing sheet occurs in 10 minutes, and the DI prints up to 10,000 impressions per hour with a maximum image area of 20.07 x 14.17 inches per sheet – one of the largest print areas available in its class.
