CAPE TOWN, SA—Anderson Lithograph President Mark Tennant traveled from Los Angeles to the southern tip of the African continent to compete as a finalist in the Sappi International Printer of the Year awards and to tack on a little vacation time. But he didn't need to go on a safari to still come close to an elephant.
That's because Cenveo Anderson Lithograph captured the elephant trophy as Sappi 2004 International Printer of the Year for its Cadillac XLR 2004 brochure entry. The award was announced Oct. 22 during an elegant awards gala hosted by South Africa-based Sappi Ltd. at the Vergelegen wine estate located near Cape Town.
Anderson Litho was first announced as North American Printer of the Year earlier in the evening, before competing against the other regional finalists for top honors in the worldwide printing competition that garners more than 6,000 entries.
The winning brochure's cover was printed on a 10-color, 40˝ Heidelberg UV interdeck-equipped sheetfed press with coater and extended delivery, according to Anderson Litho Account Executive Suzi Romanik. The rest of the job was printed on eight-color, 40˝ Heidelberg UV presses with extended deliveries and coaters. The production run of 60,000 60-page brochures was primarily printed on Sappi McCoy Gloss Cover paper, as well as some translucent text pages.
"We printed those text pages that utilized $uper$ilver ink (a highly reflective ink that has actual bits of metallic silver) in a single pass using both UV for the laydown of the $uperSilver and then conventional inks for the rest of the process and PMS colors, as well as the aqueous coating," explains Romanik.
"In this way, we achieved a dry trap onto the metallic $uper$ilver with the richness and intensity of conventional inks for the rest of the job—allowing us to manipulate the amount of $uper$ilver under the process in a single pass."
The following morning, Sappi Ltd. CEO Jonathan Leslie announced that, beginning in 2005, there will no longer be overall regional winners or one overall international winner. Instead, Sappi will award nine International Printer of the Year awards—one elephant trophy to each category winner.
Gold winners from the four regions will be invited to attend the international event held in Shanghai, China, next year.
