Argentinian Government Vows to 'Monitor' RR Donnelley Bankruptcy to Try to Preserve 400 Jobs

BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA—August 28, 2014—In the latest update on the RR Donnelley plant closure and layoff of over 400 workers at the plant based here, Cabinet chief Jorge Capitanich said that "necessary monitoring" of RR Donnelley would be implemented to guarantee the sources of work for those workers, reported the Buenos Aires Herald.

"There are different solutions in hand," Capitanich said, regarding the fate of the workers that showed up for work on Aug. 11, and found the gates locked and a note on the front door informing them that their services were no longer required. Negotiations between RR Donnelley and various unions over concessions had been ongoing prior to the bankruptcy. "Cooperativization although not recommended...is an option. Another one is to evaluate the offers for the continuity of production," he added.

According to the Herald, "Optimal conditions" was how the chief of ministers in his daily press briefing described the state of RR Donnelley's plant and equipment in the Garín district of Buenos Aires Province. He also revealed that the government is working with the Printing Industry Federation towards the preservation of jobs.
