Installation Helps Bring in More Work
MANCHESTER, MA—Cricket Press recently installed a Vijuk 321-T saddlestitcher. As a result of the new equipment, the full-service printer reports it is no longer outsourcing large jobs and is now taking in binding work from other printers.
Customer Event Held on Long Island
HAUPPAUGE, NY—Muller Martini hosted an open house March 22nd, providing an opportunity for customers to experience the high-speed Corona perfect binder in action. The event, held at Muller Martini’s Corporate Training Center on Long Island, was attended by printers and binders from throughout the country. Attendees learned about the Corona’s features, including: menu-guided operation and 15 minute computer-assisted, motorized makeready; storage of up to 1,000 jobs; decentralized exterior buttons with digital displays for automatic, on-the-fly adjustments at every station; modular design for tailoring the Corona system to specific needs; and running speed of 12,000 to 18,000 cycles per hour.
Capacity Increased With Spiral Binder
HOUSTON—The recent expansion of a Gateway Bookbinding Systems Plastikoil Concept QS Interline system to a Concept QS2 dual setup has enabled Rasch Graphic Services to double its plastic spiral binding capacity. In addition to actually manufacturing the plastic spiral on-site, the forming machine is now connected to two interlined automatic coil inserters. Production speeds are up to 1,400 books per hour.
Publication Printer Bolsters Its Bindery
BELLMARR, NJ—Evergreen Printing & Publishing has installed a Muller Martini BravoPlus saddlestitcher with AMRYS (Automatic Make-Ready System), as well as an AlphaLiner inserting system that can process 15,000 copies per hour.
“As a result of these installations, we are better able to maintain pricing and remain highly competitive,” says Tom Meyer, process control manager.
Evergreen Printing & Publishing produces daily newspapers, weeklies and magazines. The company runs two heatset press lines and also has six coldset presses. In addition, Evergreen has an extensive postpress operation consisting of five inserting lines, three stitching lines, a polybag line, ink-jet capabilities and four different offset mailing lines.
“We needed to beef up our postpress capabilities even more to meet the speed and capability of our press lines,” Meyer notes.
Quebecor Selects Postpress Systems
MONTREAL—Quebecor Inc. has selected Ferag to provide the mailroom systems for its new news-paper printing facilities in Montreal and Toronto.
“We selected Ferag based on the speed and accuracy of their equipment, as well as their integrated controls to tie the entire postpress operation together,” states Nolin Richard, vice president of corporate production, distribution and procurement for the Sun Media group.
Ferag will be installing the following equipment at each of the two sites beginning mid-2006: UTR gripper conveyor lines; MultiDisc DiscPool automated buffering systems; three MultiSert drum inserting systems, each including two preprint unwinders and RollStream feeder positions; six MultiStack stacking systems; six Tyline conveyors, each consisting of top sheet printing and application systems, bottom wrappers and strappers; a PKT bundle distribution system with telescopic truck loaders; a palletizer; a waste handling system; and a post-production control system.
The press conveyors will deliver either directly to the stackers or to the buffer systems. The automated buffer system will allow the publisher to wind preprints for later insertion, or run the product live from the press to the inserter, with the buffer system accommodating for any speed variation between the press and the inserting system.
Each of the inserting systems will have two preprint unwinders and will have the ability to insert up to 24 FSIs.
