Third Miniature Folder Meets GMS' Growth Demands
EL PASO, TX—GMS Industries has added a third Vijuk-G&K SAF 36 folder to sustain its continuing growth in miniature folding. "The decision of purchasing another Vijuk was an easy one," says George Shimshock, plant manager. "Not only is it a reliable folder, but the training and support are two main reasons why we have invested in several Vijuk folders."
In addition, Javier Quintero, GMS bindery supervisor, and David Garcia, maintenance supervisor, note the ease of setups and changing or replacing the shafts as additional features, as well as the flexibility of having the controls on the feed end and the receiving end, so they don't have to stand in one place to run the machine.
Programmable Cutter Relieves Bottlenecks
DALLAS—Johnson Printing Service has installed a four-up Polar 78X programmable paper cutter featuring optional right and left side tables with air supply for easier material handling. It joins an existing Polar 78 EM cutter in the company's full-service bindery.
Johnson Printing Service specializes in the production of loose-leaf books, manuals, softcover books and a wide range of educational and training materials, most of which wind up at the cutter for trimming. Traffic to and from the cutting department ranges "from busy to really busy," according to CEO Bob Johnson Jr., noting the 20 percent increase in productivity from the new cutter.
Shop Automates Softcover Book Manufacturing
AGAWAM, MA—Bridgeport National Bindery has finished implementing a Web-to-print production line that is believed to be one of the world's first fully automated systems for printing and manufacturing softcover books on-demand.
The trade bindery expects to shorten turnaround times on producing softcover books from two days to within 12 to 24 hours by acting automatically on customer orders placed electronically.
The system consists of a cover-driven workflow that features a C.P. Bourg BBF2005 Book Factory connected to a Xerox Nuvera 288 press. The Book Factory and a three-knife trimmer are controlled by the Book-Trac manufacturing integrity system from Productive Solutions.
Printer Brings Perfect Binding Work In-House
SAN ANTONIO—Shweiki Media specializes in short- to medium-size, niche publication printing, encompassing 250 different titles. In the past, it outsourced its perfect binding work but, since that part of its business is growing, the company decided to offer the capability in-house.
After evaluating an array of adhesive binding options, Shweiki Media selected a Pantera perfect binder from Muller Martini. According to Gal Shweiki, president and CEO, "We looked at several other bindery options, but the Pantera was the only binder with the technology that allowed for short makeready and changeover times."
With the Pantera, several binding processes can be implemented in the performance range of up to 4,000 cph. In addition to conventional hotmelt binding, PUR processing is
also supported.
Sheridan Cuts Trim Collection Energy
CHELSEA, MI—Sheridan Books, a division of The Sheridan Group, served as the first North American printing industry installation of automatic gates, sensors, a Power Master variable speed drive and GreenBOX Master SRL controller from Ecogate Inc. to reduce the energy costs on its bindery trim collection system at its facility here.
The on-demand system uses electronic gates to provide trim removal for those lines actually in use, while turning off suction for inactive lines.
Actual electricity use for Sheridan's 100hp trim waste collection fan, which serves six bindery and trim lines, was reduced by more than 50 percent, contributing to an ROI of under two years. Another benefit is reduced noise levels.

The Daily Sentinel (Grand Junction, CO) has upgraded its Muller Martini SLS-1000 inserter with the WinLincs XP packaging line control system.
The in-house print shop of the Texas Department of State Health Services, located in Austin, TX, has installed a Polar 92 XT guillotine cutter with jogging unit, scale and lifts.
To support on-demand bookbinding at its Hurlock, MD, digital printing facility, Cadmus-Cenveo recently added a Standard Horizon BQ-470 four-clamp automated binder equipped with a Standard Horizon HT-101 in-line three-knife trimmer.
