Arvato Gets Personal With Healthcare Solution
VALENCIA, CA—Arvato Digital Services' print team, Media Factory, recently installed Muller Martini's SigmaBinder, SigmaTower and SigmaTrimmer to accommodate a new project from a managed care provider. Arvato Digital provides full-service printing services and specializes in customized content for the healthcare industry.
According to Todd Potrykus, Media Factory director, "The job involved a wide variety of personalized material to be produced internally utilizing a large arsenal of continuous and cutsheet printers, all supplying personalized content bound into dynamic kits.
"The combination of SigmaLine's ability to dynamically bind variable-page books and the high level of productivity we achieved enabled us to both meet and exceed our customer's requirements," he adds. "In addition, the fact that SigmaLine does not group orders by like page counts for perfect binding has increased our flexibility downstream in the supply chain in both minimizing turnaround times and reducing our operational costs."
Muller Martini's SigmaLine is a totally modular, digital book manufacturing solution. The SigmaBinder produces variable-size books at speeds to 1,000 cph. It's equipped with hot melt glue perfect binding technology for spine and side gluing. The SigmaTower cools the books prior to trimming. SigmaTrimmer utilizes three independently driven knife elements, automatically trimming books of varying sizes and thickness. Book sizes and book thickness can also be changed from cycle to cycle.
U.S. Senate Print Shop Adds Cutter
WASHINGTON, DC—The Printing, Graphics and Direct Mail Department of the U.S. Senate recently identified a need to replace its 15-year-old cutter. The print shop opted to go with a Polar 92X programmable paper cutter with jogger and scale.
The machine is also equipped with the OptiKnife knife-changing system and automatic graphic programming.
"In terms of the production work we do on paper and card stock materials, the new Polar is every bit as capable as any of our other production cutters," says reprographics specialist Buddy Pritchett. "Given the Polar's mechanical drive, we knew we wouldn't have to deal with jams when handling heavier stocks like chipboard."
The Senate print shop employs 40 and produces a variety of printed materials for U.S. Senators and their committees.
Folder/Gluer Folds Variety of Box Styles
COMMACK, NY—Beyer Graphics, a commercial printer turned folding carton converter, has added its fourth Bobst folder/gluer: an ExpertFold 110-A2 CS. The company specializes in pharmaceutical and consumer goods packaging.
The new machine's A2 configuration gives Beyer Graphics the capability to fold more than 3,000 different box styles, including a range of straight line and crash-lock boxes. It also allows Beyer to fold carton board and N, F and E micro-flute corrugated board. Plus, the unit can run product at speeds up to 1,476 fpm.
"We're fortunate enough to have grown our business over the past year so, to better meet the demand and serve our clients, we needed the increased capacity," reports Dan Beyer. "Eventually, we'll be moving into Braille with the addition of an AccuBraille unit directly to the ExpertFold," he adds.

Central Paper's Pawtucket, RI, location has installed and received training on a Rollem 24˝ Advantage slitting, scoring and perforating system.

The bindery department within Graphic Imagery, South San Francisco, CA, now houses a Standard Horizon bookletmaking system with in-line collating, jogging, stitching, folding and fore-edge trimming.
Denver-based i3logix recently installed a Standard Hunkeler Gen6 roll-to-stack system, which is running in-line with an Océ ColorStream 10000.
Minuteman Press, of North Palm Beach, FL, has installed a Morgana Digifold 5000 to help reduce its backlog of digital printing.
The in-plant printing department of the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) recently upgraded with a Stahlfolder USA B30 continuous-feed folder and a Polar 92X paper cutter, along with a two-color Speedmaster 74 perfector.
Argus, a Houston-based commercial printing division of Nationwide Graphics/Premier Print Organization, has added an MCS 4600 array to its mailing department.
