Strapper Requires Less Maintenance
LOS ALAMITOS, CA—Trend Offset Printing, a web offset printer specializing in publications, magazines, catalogs, newspaper inserts and direct mailers, is reporting success with the Muller Martini Transpak TP-701NT strapping system it installed last spring. Containing 30 percent fewer parts than comparable machines, the strapper is said to require less maintenance, fewer wear adjustments and fewer wear components.
"Transpak's ease and stability made it a great fit for our equipment," says Ernie Skillern, bindery/mailing manager. "The TP-701NT decreased the makeready time for our auxiliary equipment."
Walmart P.M.D.C. Installs Complete Cutting System
BENTONVILLE, AR—Colter & Peterson recently installed a new cutting system at Walmart P.M.D.C. based here. The complete system includes a 75˝ Saber XXL with a new auto adjust feature and a 15˝ color touchscreen powered by Microcut, Schneider Engineering automatic loader, jogger, stack lift and unloader.
Finishing Systems Handle Digitally Printed Mail Pieces
NEWINGTON, CT—Data-Mail is relying on variable data digital presses to offer its Fortune 500 customers personalized mailing capabilities. The full-service printing and mail processing facility produces 5 million pieces of mail per day.
To help produce this volume, the company has turned to multiple Rollem finishing systems to process the digitally printed mail pieces. One system alone yields 12,000 trimmed, slit, scored and perforated mailing pieces per hour.
"The TR easily separates into modules that are being used in a couple of different operations," says Mike Bolasevich, bindery manager. "It speaks to the versatility of the unit."
In-Line RFID Process for Books Awarded Patents
NASHVILLE, TN—BindTech Inc., a trade bindery and book manufacturer based here, and SATO, a company specializing in barcode printing, labeling and EPC/RFID solutions, have announced an agreement between Smart Guard LLC and SATO that awards SATO exclusive rights to all the Smart Guard patents.
Smart Guard, developed by BindTech, worked with its manufacturing group, equipment manufacturers and board manufacturers to develop an in-line manufacturing process to apply and fully conceal an RFID tag in the cover or spine of hardcover products, such as books, DVDs, CDs, game boards, puzzles, diaries, ledgers and any other type of hardcover product as it is being manufactured.
According to BindTech, by implementing RFID technology as an automated in-line manufacturing process, labor costs are not increased at the retail or manufacturing level; inventory is tracked; and the ability to reproduce, sell and/or return fraudulent copies is substantially eliminated. By using the concealed RFID smart tags, book publishers and other manufacturers can accurately track the life span of their products within their supply chains, which reduces theft and fraud while improving and streamlining their logistics and credit reconciliation processes.

• Universal Printing, based in St. Louis, has installed a RIMA-System RS 820 trimming line in conjunction with a new RS-34 indexing stacker on its Goss Sunday 2000 web press to eliminate off-line trimming and efficiently press finish a variety of work. PI
