New Folder Handles Wide Range of Jobs
RENO, NV—J.C. Weir Inc., a full-service commercial printer based here, has upgraded its folding department with a new 20x28˝ Stahlfolder Ti 52 with right-angle unit and gatefold attachment.
According to company owner J.C. Weir, the folder offers several features that improve the overall quality of the folds, with precise transport of signatures and accurate sheet alignment. He adds that the flat pile feeder has the flexibility for handling digital jobs with the inherent static and lots of small jobs with frequent format changes.
Large-Format Outsert System Folds Bigger Sheet Sizes
ELMWOOD PARK, NJ—Miniature Folding, a family-owned business serving the commercial and pharmaceutical printing industry, recently purchased a new Vijuk MV-11 triple-knife outsert system. With sheet sizes continuing to grow, the company realized the imminent need for a large-format, miniature folding outsert machine with high-speed capabilities.
Since its installation, Joseph Taliercio, operations manager, has been impressed with the way the pressing units deliver a nice, flat, finished product. He also likes how the MV-11's double-sheet detection system automatically ejects doubles without stopping production, and the accuracy of the non-contact gluing system.
“Adding a 16-plate outsert system is just another step in our quest to become a one-stop shop for all of our clients’ outsert folding needs,” says Taliercio. “We want our customers to know that we have the equipment necessary to satisfy all of their folding, padding, tipping and product placement needs.”
EFI's Auto-Count Now Integrates With Polar Cutters
FOSTER CITY, CA—In a partnership with Heidelberg, EFI has
developed an interface from its Auto-Count direct machine interface to Heidelberg's Polar XT high-speed guillotine cutting systems and peripherals. It enables users to have real-time reporting and scheduling capabilities for this manual step in the production process.
Jefferson City, MO-based Modern Litho-Print was one of the first companies to beta test this new integration. The full-service provider operates the complete EFI Monarch suite and uses Auto-Count throughout its plant. "Until now, the cutter was a black hole in our workflow since there was no way to schedule this equipment or capture data from it," says Jim Tomblinson, plant superintendent.
"With the new Auto-Count integration to our Polar 137 XT, we're able to obtain and track job information and operator productivity, and schedule the cutter in our overall workflow. This scheduling capability is especially useful for large jobs with multiple versions."
Binding Products Shown at Open House
LONG ISLAND CITY, NY—Spiel Associates recently held its annual fall open house, where manufacturer representatives from Graphic Whizard, Dry-Lam and MBM Corp. showed off their new wares. Some of the new products highlighted were the MBM Aerocut slitter, cutter and creaser; the Dry-Lam Fujipla ALM3220 single- and double-sided laminator; and two Graphic Whizard creasers and UV coater.
Spiel also showcased the Sterling Digipunch, auto "touchscreen" punch, the Coilmaster Jr. automatic plastic coil binder and the Sterling Digibinder automatic perfect binder.

AGS, a Consolidated Graphics company based in White Plains, MD, has installed the first Standard Hunkeler PF7 double plow-fold system in North America. The PF7 allows AGS' Kodak Prosper 5000XL inkjet web press to gain efficiencies by running and finishing wider rolls into book blocks.
Germantown, WI-based Reindl Bindery recently acquired a Kolbus KM 600 perfect binder with PUR adhesive.
To support its growing pharmaceutical folding business, Haapanen Brothers, Lake Forest, IL, has added a continuous-feed, 20x28˝ Ti 52 Stahlfolder.
Houston-based Seidl's Bindery has added tag stringing, padding and film laminating to its host of solutions.
Following a fire, Lexington, KY-based Thoroughbred Printing acquired a three-station, 30˝ USA B30 Stahlfolder to replace its damaged 26˝ Stahlfolder.
Bindagraphics, Baltimore, has installed a new Sakurai MS102A2 silk screen press, offering customers spot UV, raised/thick UV, glitter and textured UV—all on a 40˝ sheet.
Pinta Foamtec, based in Minneapolis, purchased an 18˝ Rollem semi-slitter to add to its in-line system, where stickers are converted from rolls to individual pieces as part of a diecutting process.
Medford, OR-based, CDS Publications, a Consolidated Graphics company, is now operating a new Muller Martini Diamant MC 35 Bookline.
