Customized Postpress System Boosts Productivity

LA VERGNE, TN—Odcombe Press, the printing arm of Haynes Publishing, has completed a four-year project with partners Muller Martini and Solema for an end-to-end postpress solution to handle the company's diverse range of printing jobs, which includes automotive repair manuals and other specialty titles of varying sizes and formats.

Upgrading from a 15-year-old Muller Martini Monostar perfect binder, a customized solution was developed. Because of the diversification of its product line, Haynes sought a major upgrade to their postpress manufacturing capabilities, one that involved the configuration of a high-speed perfect binding line and a fully integrated packaging and palletizing solution that had the ability to do shrink wrapping, cartoning and palletizing—all in-line.

The key to the success of such an ambitious venture was to engage Muller Martini and Solema, an Italy-based packaging manufacturer that Haynes had worked with in the past. Together, the customer and the manufacturers developed a highly complex and customized solution—one that even included the design and manufacture of an all-new cartoning machine.

The full contingent of the Muller/Solema solution for Haynes includes a Corona C-12 binder, a 3695 gathering machine, automated stream feeders, a Book Data Center that allows operators to preset jobs, a Zenith S three-knife 
trimmer, a Solema speedy diverter to switch from one lane to two, two Solema glove compensating stackers, a Solema Magic Box fully automatic cartoning machine and a Solema Pluton palletizer.

Cal Poly Receives New Polar Cutter

SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA—Heidelberg USA has donated a high-speed, programmable Polar 92 XT paper cutter with CompuCut to California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly) for use in the organization's Graphic Communication Department curriculum and Graphic Communication Institute for research and training. The cutter was dedicated during Cal Poly's four-day celebration of the 2011 International Printing Week from Jan. 25-28.

The new, JDF-compliant guillotine replaces a 10-year-old Polar cutter, and joins a four-color Speedmaster CD 74 perfector, a pair of Printmaster QM 46-4s and assorted prepress equipment. "Heidelberg and Cal Poly have been mutually supportive partners for many years, and we share a like-minded approach to the task of preparing the next generation of industry leadership," says Harvey Levenson, professor and head of the Graphic Communication Department at Cal Poly.

Auto Wire Binder Speeds Output

PROVIDENCE, RI—Ocean State Bindery has installed a Rilecart B-535 double-loop wire binder from Spiel Associates that has the capability of automatically binding up to 2,500 books per hour. "We used to average between 300 and 500 books per hour on two semi-automatic machines, with four operators," reports Bruce Boyarsky, owner. "Now, we average around 2,200 books per hour with 
the same four operators."

First U.S. Thermo Camera on Open PUR Glue Pot

STONE MOUNTAIN, GA—C&C Trade Bindery, a perfect binding and mechanical book binding specialist, has added a new WST thermographic glue control system (GC1-1) on its open PUR glue pot. It is reportedly the first thermo camera for perfect-bound products to be installed in the U.S. market.

The GC1-1 system is designed to ensure and control the high quality of the glue application on products. In addition to PUR, it can be used on other adhesives like hotmelt applied by either an extrusion system or glue roller technology.

According to Charlie Saudarg, C&C president, when his operator first tested the GC1-1, he touched the glue application on a book spine before it passed the camera system, and the system detected the same small spot every time

BIA Conference 
Will Feature Two Local Plant Tours

ORLANDO, FL—The Binding 
Industries Association (BIA) Conference, held May 23-25 here at the Omni Orlando Resort at ChampionsGate, will have two in-depth plant tours to complement the many sessions at the conference.

NIS Print will give attendees firsthand tips on how to create eye-catching binders, presentation products and booklets. The SunDance Marketing Solutions tour will teach visitors how to use multi-channel marketing to help widen their customer bases.

• A new Standard Horizon StitchLiner 5500 with high-speed sheet feeder and the Standard VIVA inspection system is now up and running at Copy General located in Dulles, VA.
