Folder Supports Pharma/Medical Device Business
INDIANAPOLIS—The SPG Graphics division of HardingPoorman Group recently installed a three station, 6/6/4 Vijuk-G&K FA-74 commercial folding machine. "We needed a miniature folder to support our growing business with pharmaceutical and medical device customers," reports COO Steve Anzalone. The folder's ability to handle large flat sizes and still fold very small finished pieces were factors in the buying decision. "This flexibility allows us to use this single machine for a wide range of products—from standard signature and brochure work all the way down to pharma package inserts," he adds.
Newspaper Invests In Six Mailroom Inserting Lines
NEW YORK—The New York Daily News is continuing to invest in the future of the daily newspaper and gaining new flexibility in the mailroom at the same time. Its recent, $150 million investment included three KBA Commander CT web presses and a total of six Ferag inserting lines.
In all, six mailroom lines have been installed. To compensate for performance differences in the pressroom and mailroom, the paper decided to go with an off-line inserting process operating with DiscPool buffer storage.
From buffer storage, the main product goes to one of the six inserting lines and is merged with the inserts in one of the MSD-M inserting drums. RollStream precollecting systems handle insert processing, each of which are equipped with six hoppers. As a result, advertising customers can book supplements seven days a week, whereas inserting was previously possible only in the Sunday edition.
Carton Converter Increases Efficiency
NEENAH, WI—The folding carton group of Menasha Packaging has taken delivery of a Diana Pro 114 straight-line folder/gluer and Diana packer from Heidelberg.
Since completing the installation, Menasha has increased productivity by 30 percent, which the company attributes to reduced make- ready and changeover times.
"Our belt speeds reach to 650 mpm on the Diana Pro 114," says operations manager Tim Castor. "We've actually doubled our speed on a couple of jobs, and greatly improved our overall efficiency."
He adds that the Diana Packer, which integrates well with the folder/gluer, can pack more than 200,000 cartons per hour.
