KENNESAW, GA—June 18, 2008—Installation is now underway at Anderson Lithograph, a Cenveo company (NYSE: CVO), for the first of two Speedmaster XL 105 8-color with coater presses from Heidelberg. Both presses are equipped with the latest color control systems — Prinect Press Center with Intellistart, Wall Screen and Prinect Axis Control closed-loop color. The press currently being installed is a conventional machine, while the second machine has both conventional and UV capabilities, plus Heidelberg’s special plastic kit to enable more efficient printing on plastics and synthetic substrates. The new presses will provide significant productivity improvements, enabling Anderson Litho to provide additional print capacity to its customers.
In deciding which new presses to purchase, Anderson explored a wide range of options. “We had done some print tests early on when the XL 105 was just coming to market a few years ago,” said Ed Binder, Anderson’s vice president, director of operations. “We saw the potential, but were not yet ready to purchase and continued to review our options from all manufacturers.”
Early in 2008, Binder and a group of pressmen traveled to Heidelberg’s Print Media Demonstration Center in Kennesaw, Ga. to run the XL 105 through an extremely demanding series of print tests — including printing automobile photographs very sensitive to precise sheet travel and grey balance. After a comparison of all the presses Anderson had seen, the Speedmaster XL 105 not only produced the best quality, but did so at the full rated press speed of 18,000 sph.
“We did our homework in evaluating the XL 105 — and we basically fell in love with it,” Binder said. “The improvements that Heidelberg has made to this press since we initially saw it a few years ago really sold it for us. We proved to ourselves that it was indeed a true 18,000 sheets per hour press. It’s a press designed to not only do the best quality, but also to go fast.”
Binder and his staff also appreciate the ergonomics and overall design of the XL 105. “The way they’ve designed the press with all the steps and catwalks is very operator friendly, and far superior to other presses,” he said. “Heidelberg’s integration of the UV lamps into the press is quite impressive. We’re very excited to get them in. The whole design is really fantastic.”
Anderson has long been a proponent of using UV to enhance print products, and is a leader when it comes to quality and innovation. The shop is especially known for its work in the fashion and automotive industries, which have exacting color standards.
“Anderson is recognized in the industry as a premier high-quality printer in North America,” said Soren Larsen, vice president, national accounts, Heidelberg. “The XL 105 was built specifically to provide superior quality, efficiency, productivity and reliability needed by printers in today’s ultra-competitive market. A premier printer like Cenveo’s Anderson Lithograph will benefit greatly with these acquisitions and we’re thrilled to be working with Anderson on their new installations and look forward to seeing the results for their business.”
