Vistaprint Loses Lawsuit
RADEBEUL, GERMANY—European online printer Unitedprint.com and its subsidiary, print24 GmbH, has claimed final judgment victory in a German Provincial High Court against Vistaprint. It reportedly reaffirms a 2010 verdict reached by the Dresden District Court that determined Vistaprint had gained a competitive advantage through unfair competition practices.
RRD Worker Caught Stealing
MATTOON, IL—An RR Donnelley employee was arrested and charged with theft for allegedly stealing around 140,000 pounds of copper-aluminum sheeting during the course of a three-year period and covering it up, the Journal Gazette & Times-Courier reported. Wallace Sanders, 55, was
accused of robbing about $60,000 worth of sheeting and altering company records to cover up the thefts.
Tidewater Purchases Sunday
CENTREVILLE, MD—Tidewater Direct, a web offset printing company with three plants in the United States, has purchased an eight-unit Goss Sunday 2000 printing press to install at its 100,000-square-foot facility here. This marks the first major investment in printing technology in the Centre-
ville plant since Tidewater Direct began operations in 2006. The installation of the press is projected to be operational in mid-September.
Investment Buoys QuadDirect
EFFINGHAM, IL—QuadDirect, a division of Quad/Graphics Inc., has embarked upon a multimillion-dollar investment in new commingling mailing and in-line manufacturing equipment and systems. A year-long expansion project included the installation of two additional high-speed letter sorters for commingling operations
at the 579,000-square-foot facility.
Cenveo Nets Contracts
STAMFORD, CT—Cenveo Inc. has been retained by Thompson Media Group to manage its content, print and fulfillment production needs and provide mobile apps to Thompson’s customers. Cenveo Publisher Services, a division of Cenveo, has also been awarded a new, three-year contract by the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology to provide journal production services.
drupa Strong for Heidelberg
KENNESAW, GA—Heidelberg North America reported a strong performance during drupa in May, with 100-plus orders signed. In total, Heidelberg North America received orders for more than 30 offset presses, almost 40 postpress solutions, and 30 prepress, workflow and CTP solutions. Forty percent of orders were for Heidelberg innovations introduced at drupa.
Paper Industry Guru Dies
EXTON, PA—Bill Subers, founder of Grade Finders Inc., passed away July 1 at the age of 80. Mr. Subers had served the graphic arts community for 47 years as publisher of the “Competitive Grade Finder” (www.paperbuyers-
online.com) and other paper buyer directories, considered the “Bibles of the industry.” He worked in conjunction with paper mills, merchants and converters to develop Grade Finders’ brightness and opacity standards, which were adopted by the entire industry and are still in use today.
Correction
PHILADELPHIA—The “Inkjet and B2 Digital Trend” article in last month’s issue contained a factual error. The Meteor DP8700 S was actually MGI’s entry-level digital press introduced at drupa 2012. It has a maximum format of 13x19˝. The multi-substrate Meteor DP8700 XL press, which made its formal debut at Graph Expo last year, features 13x40˝ print capabilities.
