Standard Closing MD Facility
SALISBURY, MD—Standard Register informed employees here that it will close by the middle of this summer, The Daily Times reported. The move will put 76 employees out of work. In a press release, the company said the move was motivated by reduced demand for printed forms and documents, among other items.
Gannett Sells Heatset to Quad
MAPLE GROVE, MN—Newspaper publisher Gannett Co. has sold the heatset portion of its printing operation to Sussex, WI-based Quad/Graphics Inc. As a result, 140 Gannett employees lost their jobs, the Star Tribune reported. Quad will relocate the heatset work being done at the Maple Grove plant to existing facilities it has in the region. Gannett will continue to operate coldset newspaper printing out of the Maple Grove facility.
Flint Group Is Being Sold
NEW YORK—Goldman Sachs Merchant Banking Div. announced that it has partnered with Koch Equity Development LLC, a subsidiary of Koch Industries, to acquire shares representing 100 percent of Flint Group's share capital from funds advised by private equity firm CVC Capital Partners. Koch Equity Development has agreed to invest with Goldman Sachs in a newly formed entity that will acquire Flint Group.
Fire Levels CA Printing Plant
CORNING, CA—A March 16 fire completely decimated Adman Printing, while two nearby businesses here escaped serious damage. There were no injuries, according to KRCR-TV, and early reports indicate arson may have been the cause. Corning Fire Chief Martin Spannaus told the station that it was investigating reports of someone seen leaving the area right around the time that the fire broke out.
Glen Taylor Buys Newspaper
MINNEAPOLIS—Glen Taylor, owner of North Mankato, MN-based printing conglomerate Taylor Corp. and the NBA Minnesota Timberwolves franchise, has reached a deal to acquire the Star Tribune newspaper for $100 million, the newspaper itself revealed. Taylor had tried to purchase the paper four years ago, when it was emerging from bankruptcy.
4over Adds Package Printing
GLENDALE, CA—Due to high customer demand for paperboard package printing, 4over Inc. has announced the launch of its new Package Printing division, offering low-cost, short-run product packaging. The line includes a variety of paperboard box styles, an assortment of promotional/point-of-sale products and a wide range of labels and stickers to accompany these products. All 4over packaging is said to be composed of premium quality, bright white stocks.
New Sheeter for Roosevelt
MT. LAUREL, NJ—Roosevelt Paper is installing a 73˝-wide MarquipWard-United sheeter at its facility in Alsip, IL. It is Roosevelt's fifth sheeter, but the first for the Alsip plant. The sheeter, with twin-cut knives to maximize efficiency on small lengths, will be able to run up to six rolls at a time of coated and uncoated text through 40-pt. board.
Built-in LED-UV Curing Press
MONTREAL—Trade printer Imprimerie Reflet has installed a new, eight-up Ryobi 925 press with LED-UV instant curing system. The new five-color, 36˝ fully automated sheetfed offset press, which was installed by Imprimerie Reflet last December, marks the first North American installation featuring LED-UV curing incorporated into the press by the manufacturer. Manufacturers Ryobi and Panasonic jointly developed the new technology.
