D’Andrea Visual Communications (DVC) was recognized with seven Best of Category awards and seven Awards of Excellence at this year’s Printing Industry Association’s Southern California award show. Also known as the Print Excellence Awards, the show recognizes the very best in print.
The judging panel is made up of a team of distinguished professionals with a minimum of 10+ years in the graphic arts industry and judges consider the quality of printing, degree of difficulty, technical expertise, including: registration, ink coverage, density of solids, dot structure, crossovers, paper usage, category description, finishing techniques and overall visual appearance.
DVC entered three pieces, all media kits for their client FX Network.
The first entry, Mayans Media Kit, took home 5 Best of Category awards including the night's biggest award – Best in Show. Other awards won for this piece included: Best Media Kit, Best Industrial Printing, Best Special Finishing Technique and Best Binding.
“The leather belts for the closure of the kit were a big hit. People loved it and so did the judges. The canvas printed, foam stuffed cover, was an attempt to simulate the blanket rolls that the Mayans keep on the handlebars of their motorcycles,” shared Denise Okata, DVC’s Senior Account Executive. “We were able to utilize both our grand format press and litho press to bring this kit to life.”
The second entry, Pose Media Kit, took home 2 Best Of Category awards including Best Hi-Fidelity Printing and Best Use of Ink.
“The Pose Media Kit not only stood out for Best Hi-Fidelity Printing and Best Use of Ink, but this kit was sparkling with glitter cold foil. We used glitter foil printed in 4-color process, glitter UV coating, feathers and specialty inks for maximum impact in homage to the performance artists who are the stars of the show,” Okata said.
DVC is known for their cold foil capability in the litho print market. Their cold foil is laid down on the press sheet inline allowing for a more cost effective and quicker turn time than hot foil stamping.
“When print designers see this foiling technique, they absolutely love it,” states David D’Andrea, CEO of DVC. “And when they see how the foil can be overprinted to achieve just about any metallic color is when they realize the extraordinary can be achieved.”
The third entry, Legion Media Kit, took home 2 Awards of Excellence for Hi-Fidelity Printing and Specialty Printing.
“What better way to portray a troubled man who suffers from schizophrenia than a lenticular graphic! That is exactly the process used here for the slipcase. To keep things even more interesting, the cover was 4-color process printed over holographic foil and several specialty paper stocks were used throughout the book,” Okata mentioned. “Let’s just say this kit was crazy fun to produce.”
DVC has a very collaborative and consultative approach in producing their projects. They thrive on the collaboration with designers, their sales team and press crew which ultimately leads to their success.
