HAUPPAUGE, N.Y.—September 10, 2015—DISC, a resource for specialty packaging solutions for more than 40 years, announced that the company’s patented NEO Blu-ray disc package received a Gold Award in the 2015 Gold Ink Awards program, sponsored by Printing Impressions magazine. The award spotlights the special collector NEO packaging created for Paramount Pictures’ popular space adventure film, Interstellar, which was produced for Walmart’s exclusive limited edition release. It represents the highest accolade in the competition’s Multimedia Packaging category.
"We are extremely proud to have partnered with Paramount Pictures to produce this award winning package and to be recognized by our peers in the industry,” said John Rebecchi, senior vice president, marketing and new business development and director for DISC. “This year’s prestigious panel of industry experts evaluated more than 1,000 entries in 50 plus categories on the basis of three criteria: excellence in design, execution and level of difficulty. Judges were also looking for a hard-to-define ‘WOW’ factor that sets winners apart from the many excellent contenders. This award is shared by everyone in the DISC design, development and production teams who worked hard to create that ‘WOW’ factor and to bring this special edition NEO package to life.”
The centerpiece of the Interstellar Limited Edition Collector’s Set for Walmart was a four-panel NEO Media Package that housed three discs—two Blu-ray and one DVD. It also contained a 48-page full-color art book and a 3-inch wide IMAX film cell from a 70mm film print. The NEO package created a surge of interest with consumers such that online and store sales instantly sold out. The signature design element of NEO that makes it a standout package is its proprietary, patent pending PixelChrome multi-layered technology, which uses highly reflective lithographic material. It provides a super-glossy canvas on frameless art panels to showcase title graphics of Paramount’s space adventure film, Interstellar.
The Gold Ink Awards are considered to be the most exacting competition in the printing industry, comparable to the Oscars. Each year, a distinguished panel of graphic arts professionals reviews entries from all over the world in more than 50 categories. During the three-day competition deliberations, they assess each one for excellence in printing and decorative processes, choice of substrates, finishing techniques, and overall appearance, quality and aesthetic impact. All Gold-level winning pieces will be on display at the 28th Gold Ink Awards Gala in Chicago on September 13th where attendees will vote live for the overall People’s Choice Award for 2015.
