Command Web Offset Closing its Doors
SECAUCUS, NJ—Command Web Offset, a 40-year-old book printing operation severely pinched by electronic books in particular and digital publishing in general, will close its doors Nov. 15, resulting in more than 100 layoffs, The Record reported.
The company filed notice with the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development, a move required by the federal WARN Act. The newspaper said 105 employees will be impacted.
Andrew Merson, president and owner of the company, cited the digital revolution among other challenges as factoring into his decision to shut the plant, which produces 1.5 million books per day, according to the paper. Command Web Offset prints soft-cover books, directories, catalogs and various publications.
The facility is one of five in the Command Web Group, along with Bind-Rite Graphics in South Hackensack, NJ; Strategic Content Imaging (SCI) of Carstadt, NJ; Bind-Rite Robbinsville (NJ); Command Web Missouri, Jefferson City, MO; and Command Financial Press, New York. Command Web Offset is a division of MacNaughton Lithograph.
