With 1999 in sight, the top movers and shakers at the helm of most major publicly held printing companies continue to rank prominently on Printing Impressions' ninth annual executive compensation report, which features 20 of the industry's highest paid executives.
Topping the list for the second consecutive year is one of the Top 20's youngsters, 45-year-old David A. Brandon, president, CEO and director of Valassis Communications in Livonia, MI.
Brandon's salary and bonus is $2,012,024, plus other compensation of $3,512,568—which places him at the top of the list with a total of $5,524,592 in annual pay for services rendered.
Brandon's previous year total compensation in the same post at Valassis Communications was a reported $2,012,024. He wasn't featured on our list in 1996.
In fact, in 1996, the youngest executive on the list was John W. Castro, then 47, president and CEO of Merrill Corp., St. Paul, MN. At 49, Castro, still president and CEO at Merrill, remains high on the list, with a total compensation package worth $1,184,824.
Representing North America's largest printer, R.R. Donnelley & Sons, is William L. Davis, chairman and CEO, with a total salary reported at $5,062,105.

Printing Impressions uses base salaries and listed cash bonuses to tabulate compensation levels. We do not include any stock options, which may or may not have been exercised. Obviously, these options may increase earnings greatly.
