Fire Damages Quad/Graphics Facility
MARTINSBURG, WV—Firefighters battled through the night to douse a press fire and clear out thick clouds of smoke at Quad/Graphics’ plant here. No injuries were reported, but the smoke caused about $100,000 worth of damage, according to The Journal of Martinsburg, WV.
The fire broke out just before 1 a.m. on the morning of June 12, prompting the evacuation of employees. While it took roughly an hour to get the fire under control, most of the time was spent trying to draw smoke out of the nearly two million-square-foot facility, The Journal reported. The press’ central location within the building made access difficult for fire personnel and their equipment.
According to the paper, a broken part on the press caused hydraulic fluid to leak, which then ignited due to high temperatures in the building. Claire Ho, spokesperson for Sussex, WI-based Quad/Graphics, said that the fire is still under investigation. She added that the company is in the process of determining the damage estimate.
