Future Authors Complete Fourth Annual Summer Writing Workshop
BOCA RATON, FL—07/07/2009—The 2009 Océ Future Authors Project, a partnership between the School District of Palm Beach County and Océ North America, concluded its annual eight-day writing workshop with 49 middle and high school students participating at Boca Raton High School and Glades Central High School.
The Glades students, who participated through distance learning technology, traveled to Boca one of the workshop days to hear Poet Dwight Seon Stewart talk about his journey as an author and share writing tips with the budding authors. Jonathon King, the author of six critically acclaimed, award-winning novels, including his new South Florida thriller Acts of Nature, also spoke to the students for the third year in a row. Sally Ling, who has written five historical non-fiction and fiction books, also returned for a second year and offered the students insights into the challenges of writing a book and getting it published.
Student writings compiled during the workshop will appear in the book, So You Think You Can Write?, which will be unveiled at a book signing this fall at the City of Boca Raton Spanish River Library. Océ North America will compile and publish the book using the Océ Digital Book Solution.
Sheryl Pattek, Vice President, Marketing Services for Océ North America’s Production Printing Systems division in Boca Raton, talked to the future authors about the rapidly changing world of publishing thanks to the advancements of digital printing technology.
“Our goal with this program is to help students improve their writing and critical thinking skills, develop an understanding of how authors are published, and learn about today’s digital print and publishing opportunities,” she said. “Digital printing technology brings a greater diversity of titles to market by enabling a cost model that works for runs of one or 1,000.”
