Gannett to Shutter Springfield, Virginia, Publication Printing Plant; 250 Jobs Will Be Lost
SPRINGFIELD, Va.—October 7, 2015—Gannett Co. Inc. announced to its employees on Tuesday that it will be shutting down its Gannett Publishing Services arm located here by Feb. 28, 2016. The closure will reportedly affect some 250 employees, reported the Washington Business Journal.
Gannett prints USA Today, its flagship publication, at the Springfield production facility and at other locations across the United States. In addition to USA Today, the Springfield location also printed The New York Times regional edition, the Washington Business Journal, the Sun Gazette, Army Times, Air Force Times, and other publications.
In June, Gannett announced several major changes with the closure of its offset printing facility in Maple Grove, Minnesota, where regional copies of USA Today were also printed. That same month, Gannett also split into two companies—newspaper publisher Gannett and digital and broadcast company Tegna.
Gannett Publishing Services was ranked #56 on the 2014 Printing Impressions 400 list with most recent fiscal year annual sales of $92 million. Gannett is the fifth-largest commercial printer in the Greater Washington area, with $18.11 million in metro-area revenue in 2014, according to the Washington Business Journal's list of top area commercial printers. The Business Journal reported that Gannett Publishing Services posted $29.22 million metro-area sales the previous year, when it was ranked the largest printer by revenue.
