PHILADELPHIA — June 23, 2016 — This 2016 Gold Ink Awards entry was submitted and entered into the Folding Cartons category by Classic Color of Broadview, Ill. The Sappi Holiday Gift Box was created to remind Sappi Fine Paper's customers how paper plays a magical role in creating unforgettable experiences, especially around the holidays. The multi-component gift set includes a gift box, gift bag, wrapping paper, gift tags, greeting cards and envelopes. What makes this gift box stand out are the fun designs, vivid colors and cool effects using coatings and scented varnishes.
A press run of 10,000 pieces was produced on an eight-color, 40˝ Komori Lithrone (GL840) sheetfed press equipped with fully inter-decked UV lamps. Sappi Opus paper was used in various weights: gift box (130-lb. Sappi Opus Gloss cover), gift bag (80-lb. Sappi Opus Gloss cover), wrapping paper (100-lb. Sappi Opus Dull text), gift tags (65-lb. Sappi Opus PS Matte cover), greeting cards (80-lb. Sappi Opus PS Matte cover) and envelopes (100-lb. Sappi Opus PS Matte text.)
Multiple process, PMS match and fluorescent colors and varnishes were also used for this project, including Toyo four-color process, match fluorescent pink, match fluorescent orange, match fluorescent purple, match fluorescent red, match green, match yellow, spot gloss/dull varnishes and chrome silver ink. Some of the special effects that were applied included peppermint and cinnamon scented varnishes on the wrapping papers (activated by rubbing the cinnamon stick and peppermint candy), light matte sand texture coating, spot raised UV coating, spot UV pearl coating and soft feel UV lamination.
For the final stage, the two-piece box was assembled, the bag was converted from flat sheets and the wrapping paper was scored and folded.
According to Jeffrey Hernandez, VP at Classic Color, the challenge to produce this project came with printing 11 inks, four varnishes, three coatings, lamination and using multiple converting processes. "In the end, all of this needed to come together to satisfy multiple print experts looking to match ink colors across multiple Sappi paper finishes," explains Hernandez. Another challenge that the printer met successfully was producing the gift box without cracking the sheets. "This project is a testimony for a great sheet of paper across multiple grades, 'paper does make the big difference,'" concludes Hernandez.
