PHILADELPHIA — May 5, 2016 — This 2016 Gold Ink Awards entry was submitted and entered into the Specialty Magazines, Web Printing, category by EarthColor Inc., a commercial printer headquartered in Parsippany, N.J. The "River Oaks District Houston" Spring 2016 Look Book offers a glimpse at some of the fashion that can be found in the boutiques of Houston's River Oaks District. What makes this publication stand out right away is the unique imagery on the cover — a house that is constructed with gold, set against a desert landscape, which is all weaved together beautifully with metallic gold effects.
A press run of 50,000 magazines was produced using a six-color Mitsubishi waterless press to produce the magazine's cover, and an eight-color Heidelberg M-600 full-web offset press with in-line UV coating for the text pages. The paper selected for this project was Sappi Fine Paper — 100-lb. Opus gloss cover, and 100-lb. Opus gloss text.
The special metallic gold effect was created by using both a flexographic unit and metallic ink combined with traditional offset printing and inks. For the binding and finishing, a traditional hinge-scored perfect binding process was used.
Mark Lassi, senior VP of sales at EarthColor, points out that while obstacles were presented with applying the special techniques used in this project, the client was very excited to produce something unique and special. "So any obstacles encountered were easily worked though," he explains.
According to Lassi, the photo shoot for the various images was done in Joshua Tree, Calif., at Acido Dorado , which is a home that is actually made partially of gold. "The Laspata DeCaro design agency of New York wanted to create a unique and stunning effect utilizing the gold in its design. We worked closely with them to achieve their design and creative visions," Lassi adds.
