PHILADELPHIA — April 21, 2016 — This 2016 Gold Ink Awards entry, the Arysta Life Science Crop Protection Portfolio, was submitted by Modern Litho, a commercial printing firm based in Jefferson City, Mo. The portfolio, entered in the sheetfed brochures category, was created for client Arysta LifeScience, a global agricultural company specializing in the marketing and distribution of innovative crop protection and life science brands.
The brochure highlights the various product offerings of the company in a two-component self-promotional piece that features a box and a brochure. What makes this piece stand out is the natural wood look on both components, as well as the inside fold-out pages and translucent inserts.
A press run of 1,850 finished sets were produced on Modern Litho's Heidelberg Speedmaster XL 105 and Speedmaster SM 52 presses. The paper selected for this project was from Neenah Paper and Domtar. On the substrate side, 160-lb. Cougar White Double Thick cover from Domtar was chosen to produce the cover, inside fold-out pages and slip case. For the translucent inserts, Neenah's 28-lb. UV/Ultra Radiant White was used.
Multiple colors were also applied, with the cover and inside fold-out pages printed four-over-four with offset coating. The slip case was printed with a four-color PMS 7499 plus offset coating. The translucent inserts were printed one-over-zero.
On the binding and finishing end, the cover and inside fold-out pages required trimming, scoring, hand folding and hand collating, along with a hand punch and Wire-O 3/8˝ bind and hand glue strip to the inside of the cover. The slip case was diecut, scored and hand glued, and the translucent inserts were trimmed and hand collated into the booklet.
According to Jim Tomblinson, VP of operations at Modern Litho, the trimming and cutting of this project required careful attention. "It was challenging due to the nature of the cover stock in making sure that it did not crack," he explains. "This required coordinating our team to do the handwork necessary to make sure the quality was consistent from piece to piece."
Tomblinson added that a specialty jig was created for gluing the strip that holds the wire-O in the back.
"The customer was especially pleased with the quality of printing on the offset cover stock," adds Greg Meeker, VP of sales at Modern Litho. "The thickness of the paper contributed greatly to the overall esthetic and feel of the piece."
