EPA Recognizes Company For Environmental Efforts

LOUISVILLE, KY—The Environmental Protection Agency has named FetterGroup a 2010 Energy Star Partner of the Year for outstanding energy management and reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.

The organization reduced energy use by 33.76 percent in 2009, resulting in an 11.78 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. It projects cumulative savings of 4,776,940 pounds of CO2 by 2012.

New Campaign Champions Paper Misconceptions

WASHINGTON, DC—"Print Grows Trees" is a consumer education campaign which aims to dispel the misconception that by using less print on paper, trees are saved.

Facts show that supporting print on paper actually gives landowners the financial incentive they need to keep America's woodlands safe from development and managed in a sustainable manner to contribute to important ecosystem benefits such as water, wildlife and carbon sequestration.

SFI Marks 2,000 Chain-of-Custody Certified Sites

WASHINGTON, DC—The independent Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) program recently achieved 2,000 chain-of-custody certified locations.

Organizations certified range from small printers to lumber yards to international entities with more than 100 locations. They include 579 printers, as well as publishers, distributors, mills, paper merchants and packaging companies.

Through SFI chain-of-custody certification, companies must have a tracking system in place so they can tell buyers how much certified, responsibly sourced and/or recycled content is in a product. The program also has fiber sourcing requirements that promote responsible forest management on all suppliers' lands in North America.

Petition Demands Change to LEED Building Standard

WASHINGTON, DC—An online petition demanding changes to the U.S. Green Building Council's (USGBC) Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) green building standard is gaining support. The petition calls for the USGBC to open LEED to all "wood and paper products certified to independent, respected and credible standards including SFI, ATFS, CSA, FSC and PEFC."

Currently LEED only recognizes FSC certification, which accounts for less than one quarter of the North American certified lands, according to the SFI. Whereas, more than three quarters of North American certified forests are 
certified to standards including the SFI, American Tree Farm System and Canadian Standards Association (CSA).

EU Services, Rockville, MD, participated in the Maryland Department of the Environment's Pollution Prevention Intern Program. Based on recommendations of its engineering intern, the company installed a high-volume fan and a new "cool roof" above its pressroom facility. To reduce VOC emissions and hazardous waste, it purchased water-based parts washers.

Miami-based Original Impressions has purchased Green-e 
certified renewable green power, resulting in it being the only printer headquartered in Florida to be Green-e Marketplace Certified.

Dixie Printing and Packaging, based in Glen Burnie, MD, has 
received SFI and FSC chain-of-custody certifications from the Bureau Veritas.

BBF Integrated Solutions, a 
Condalkin Group company in Largo, FL, is now a triple-certified FSC, SFI and PEFC chain-of-custody printer.

Using renewable energy credits, Clifton, NJ-based Premium Color Group plans to use renewable energy as its sole source of power via an agreement with Renewable Choice Energy.

Launched in 2007, Agfa's GreenWorks global environmental recognition awards program has now honored 150 printers. PI
