Heidelberg at Drupa 2008: Technology Geared Towards Customer Benefits, Large-format Printing
HEIDELBERG, GERMANY—03/10/2008—At drupa 2008 from May 29 to June 11 (Halls 1 and 2), Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) will be rounding off the upper end of its portfolio for packaging and commercial printers by moving into the 102 x 142 centimeter (40.16 x 55.91 inch) and 120 x 162 centimeter (47.24 x 63.78 inch) format classes. The new platform for the Speedmaster models XL 145 and XL 162 will be put on public show for the first time at the industry event in Düsseldorf.
The Heidelberg trade show presentation is based around the slogan “HEI Performance” and “HEI Value”. Visitors to drupa will be able to see for themselves the powerful solutions that create real added value for customers. Heidelberg will also be putting the spotlight on integration solutions. The Prinect Press Center, Prinect Packaging Workflow, and Prinect Axis Control all take the workflow portfolio of Heidelberg to the next level.
A new range of platesetters from the Suprasetter series will also be on show for the first time at drupa 2008, with Heidelberg now expanding its portfolio to include the large-format Suprasetter 145, 162, and 190.
In the postpress sector, the Stahlfolder KH 82 with automatic cross-fold unit will be making its debut. Further innovations include the Eurobind 4000 perfect binder, the Diana X 115 folder gluer and the Dymatrix 145 CSB die cutter. Furthermore, the Dymatrix 106 Pro CSB die cutter and the CS and CSF Variamatrix series have been equipped with new features.
The innovations at a glance
Prinect Press Center
From drupa 2008, Heidelberg will be equipping all its Speedmaster presses (all formats) with a new, standardized high-performance control station - the Prinect Press Center. This will result in uniform operator guidance for all Speedmaster presses. The basic technology for the Prinect Press Center is provided by the new decentralized Sheetfed Control platform.
The Prinect Press Center combines press operation with color and register control in a single, central console. Particularly noteworthy innovations include the Intellistart function and the wallscreen. With Intellistart, while one job is being printed, the operator can already be preparing the next. The wallscreen, a large screen integrated into the extraneous light screen, gives press operators an unprecedented overview of all press processes. The Speedmaster presses can be shown in cut-out profile with all functions depicted dynamically. The wallscreen also supports print approval processes. The print sheet is displayed with ink zones depicted in their actual width.
Prinect Packaging Workflow
Heidelberg has extensive expertise in integrating management, prepress, press and postpress into a standardized workflow. In the run-up to drupa, the company is extending this expertise to include packaging printing. Prinect will therefore also enable print shops to produce high-quality packaging far faster than before and make their costs more transparent.
In doing so, the company has driven the development of new Prinect modules and the extension of existing ones to ensure efficient packaging printing. The resulting Prinect workflow can be configured as necessary to meet the diverse requirements of packaging printing, regardless of whether a print shop only specializes in one specific application, produces both packaging and commercial work, requires an entry-level integration solution, or aims to integrate its entire business as quickly as possible.
Prinect Axis Control
At drupa this year, Heidelberg will be unveiling a new version of its spectrophotometric color measuring system: Prinect Axis Control. This new version is fully integrated into the Prinect Press Center press control station - also new - and can be operated using its touchscreen. At 200 millimeters (7.87 inches) per second, the new-generation Prinect Axis Control measures at double the speed of its predecessor. During setup, the system automatically identifies the type of quality control strip and its position on the print sheet. The fact that the strip does not have to be positioned manually results in a time saving of over 50 percent. In addition, the strip can be placed anywhere on the sheet.
Suprasetter 145/162/190
Heidelberg is adding large-format models to its Suprasetter range to coincide with drupa 2008. The new Suprasetter 145, 162 and 190 thermal computer-to-plate systems have a dedicated new design.
Heidelberg is thus using tried-and-tested technology to augment its range of large-format packaging and commercial printing solutions. The new systems are used in conjunction with the Speedmaster XL 145 and XL 162 and can also supply plates for other presses, up to a sheet width of 190 centimeters (74.80 inches). The platesetters are available with throughput speeds of up to 35 plates per hour, with a resolution of either 2,540 or 2,400 dots per inch as required. The six cassettes of the plate loading unit enable up to 600 plates in as many as six different formats to be loaded fully automatically. This allows flexible processing of a wide range of plate formats without user intervention and takes full advantage of the productivity of large-format presses. The main target groups for this prepress solution are packaging, industrial, and web printers.
Speedmaster XL
Speedmaster XL 75
The press concept of the Speedmaster XL 75 sets new performance standards in the 50 x 70 centimeter (19.69 x 27.56 inch) format class with a capacity of up to 18,000 sheets per hour. It boasts a larger sheet format and innovations such as the new Prinect Press Center with Intellistart and the new delivery control panel with touchscreen and jog wheel. Exceptional flexibility is ensured thanks to a broad choice of printing stocks that can be used in thicknesses from 0.03-0.8 millimeter, and the wide range of straight printing and perfecting press models with up to twelve printing units and a coating unit. As a customized press with surface finishing options such as UV coatings, double coating units, cold foil application with FoilStar, and Duo presses with flexographic printing units before the offset units, the Speedmaster XL 75 also supports versatile configuration for generating added value for customers. As a result, the Speedmaster XL 75 is the perfect choice for commercial, packaging, and label printers.
Speedmaster XL 105 with perfecting device
At drupa 2008, Heidelberg introduces the Speedmaster XL 105 with perfecting device.
The press of the Peak Performance Class sets a new benchmark in terms of productivity and profitability in the perfecting sector. The Speedmaster XL 105 with perfecting device allows for productivity increases in perfecting mode of up to 40 percent compared with model ranges currently on the market. It combines all the technical advantages of the straight-printing press and integrates innovative perfecting technology into an end-to-end system with a speed of 15,000 sheets per hour.
Speedmaster XL 145/162
Heidelberg will be unveiling two new large-format presses at drupa 2008. The Speedmaster XL 145 and the Speedmaster XL 162 are the ideal complement to the upper end of the Heidelberg sheetfed offset portfolio. The presses have been designed primarily for use in the packaging printing and industrial publishing sectors. This new generation of presses offers customers outstanding advantages in terms of user-friendliness, makeready times, high plate throughput and synchronous washup processes. This enables productivity increases of up to 20 percent over similar presses. The 102 x 142 centimeter (40.16 x 55.91 inch) and 120 x 162 centimeter (47.24 x 63.78 inch) formats being offered cover more than 75 percent of the entire large-format market. Due to growing levels of industrialization and the pressure this puts on companies to streamline operations, this segment has become a key sector.
Speedmaster SM 52/SM 74
Heidelberg is unveiling the new Speedmaster SM 52 and Speedmaster SM 74 series at drupa 2008. These new models combine the previous Printmaster PM 52/Speedmaster SM 52 and Printmaster PM 74/ Speedmaster SM 74 series and offer outstanding flexibility with a wide array of customizable configurations.
The new presses will replace the Printmaster PM and Speedmaster SM presses in 35 x 50 centimeter (13.78 x 19.69 inch) and 50 x 70 centimeter (19.69 x 27.56 inch) formats. The Printmaster GTO 52 and Printmaster QM 46 series will continue to be offered.
The new Speedmaster SM 52 and Speedmaster SM 74 are available in different configurations, ranging from a low-automation press with standard-pile delivery to a fully automated press with high-pile delivery. The wide range of configurations available across the entire range of models means that each press can be tailored to the customer’s requirements. This boosts the customer’s flexibility and productivity.
Stahlfolder KH 82 with automatic cross-fold unit
Heidelberg will be launching its new Stahlfolder KH 82 combi folder with automatic cross-fold unit at drupa 2008. The machine now delivers a maximum performance of 230 meters per minute. The maximum speed has been increased to 30,000 cycles per hour. Depending on the level of automation selected, the setup time of the cross-fold unit is cut by up to 80 percent compared to its predecessor, the Stahlfolder KH 78. The machine’s stability has also been enhanced. All of these measures raise the net output by an average of 1,000+ sheets per hour. In three-shift operation, this results in extra output of around 7.2 million sheets per year. The extremely broad range of papers that can be processed with high folding quality is unrivalled in the industry today. Thanks to its short makeready times, the Stahlfolder KH 82 lends itself to typical print runs of between 7,000 and 15,000 sheets for commercial jobs and brochures. The machine’s high performance means that it can also perform long runs for book production. Therefore, this machine is aimed at industrial print shops and postpress specialists.
The new Stahlfolder KH 82 is the next development level of the TH/KH generation of folders that Heidelberg launched at drupa 2004. In the meantime, nearly 3,000 of these machines have been installed worldwide.
New folder gluer Diana X 115
Heidelberg will be showcasing its new-look folder gluer Diana X 115 at drupa 2008. It processes high-quality, complex folding cartons in both long and short runs. Its modular design boosts the potential for customization, making it the ideal solution for an almost limitless range of cartons. Over 200,000 cartons can be processed per hour at speeds of up to 650 meters (2,130 feet) per minute. This high capacity is actively supported by the Diana Feeder and the new Diana Packer.
What is more, fully automatic changeover cuts makeready times considerably. Further advantages include maintenance-free servo drive technology, a state-of the-art safety concept with light grids, and a new roller bar and transportation concept that increases flexibility and accelerates adjustment.
The completely new collapsible module was designed specifically for the production of collapsible and lockbottom cartons. As far fewer components have to be changed over, the makeready times for individual carton types are cut by up to 85 percent compared to Diana Pro.
New Dymatrix 145 CSB diecutter
At drupa 2008, Heidelberg will be introducing the new Dymatrix 145 CSB (cutting, stripping, and blanking) die cutter. This machine processes sheets up to a maximum format of 106 x 145 centimeters (41.73 x 57.09 inches) and is perfectly coordinated with the new Speedmaster XL 145. A non-stop high-performance sheet feeder ensures reliable end-to-end sheet transport via the belt table into the unit. The feeder is easy to operate, even on the fly. Straightforward job and die changes ensure short makeready times, thereby maximizing productivity and minimizing downtimes. The Dymatrix 145 CSB operates at speeds of up to 8,000 sheets per hour and can process materials thicknesses of 80 grams per square meter to 2,000 grams per square meter and corrugated board up to four millimeters (0.16 inch) thick. It can also be integrated seamlessly into the Prinect workflow, making it ideal for packaging print shops.
The Dymatrix 106 Pro CSB diecutter
At drupa 2008, Heidelberg will be presenting the Dymatrix 106 Pro CSB (cutting, stripping, and blanking) die cutter, which is equipped with a whole new set of features not supported by the Dymatrix 106 CSB. These include the optional automatic feed system, DySet, which aligns the sheets precisely prior to transfer to the gripper. It is now also possible to align the sheet laterally with reference to the printing marks or print image, which is crucial when processing reel stock. The new belt table and feeder make for reliable sheet separation and guidance. Thanks to these innovations, jams in the feeder are now a rarity and net output has been increased. The maximum sheet format of the Dymatrix 106 Pro CSB - 76 x 106 centimeters (29.92 x 41.73 inches) - is perfectly matched to the format of the Speedmaster XL 105. The broad range of materials that can be processed takes in everything from paper of 80 grams per square meter and above, card up to 2,000 grams per square meter, and corrugated board up to a thickness of four millimeters (0.16 inch). At a processing speed of up to 9,000 sheets per hour and a cutting force of 330 tons, the Dymatrix 106 Pro CSB is the ideal choice for folding carton manufacturers and postpress specialists. The Dymatrix 106 Pro CSB can be upgraded to a Dymatrix 113 Pro CSB with a sheet format of 82 x 113 centimeters (32.28 x 44.49 inches) as required. The innovations and technical features of the two machines are identical. The Dymatrix 106 Pro CSB and the Dymatrix 113 Pro CSB can both be integrated seamlessly into the Prinect workflow.
Varimatrix 105 CS diecutter
At drupa 2008, Heidelberg will be showcasing new options and a new design for the Varimatrix 105 CS (CS stands for cutting and stripping) that will make the die cutter even more flexible and user-friendly. It is the second most popular entry-level solution for commercial and packaging printers worldwide. The Varimatrix 105 CS cuts and embosses paper of up to 80 grams per square meter and above, card or solid board up to 1,400 grams per square meter, and corrugated board up to a thickness of four millimeters (0.16 inch) at a processing speed of up to 7,500 sheets per hour and a cutting force of up to 300 tons. The sheet formats that can be processed range from a minimum of 350 x 400 millimeters (13.78 x 15.75 inches) to a maximum of 750 x 1,050 millimeters (29.53 x 41.34 inches).
Varimatrix 105 CSF diecutter
At drupa 2008, Heidelberg will be showcasing the Varimatrix 105 CSF die cutter (CSF stands for cutting, stripping, and foil embossing) can be used for hot foil embossing and as a die cutter with stripping function. This makes the machine ideal for commercial and packaging printers who are looking to offer their customers a comprehensive service and added value thanks to a wider range of surface finishing options. Metallic effects and multistage/relief embossing can be applied efficiently in a single pass using the hot foil module of the Varimatrix 105 CSF. The cost-effective technology of the hot foil embosser is highly impressive. It is possible to heat only specific zones, which means that the complete plate does not have to be heated when working with small formats. In addition, a variety of feeds optimizes foil use.
The Eurobind 4000 adhesive binder
Heidelberg is launching a whole new set of options for the Eurobind 4000 adhesive binder at drupa 2008. The Eurobind 4000 is highly automated, offers exceptionally short makeready times of just a few minutes, and enables fast job changes. It processes up to 4,000 books per hour and its outstanding net output of up to 95 percent makes it the most cost-effective adhesive binder currently on the market. Its modular design delivers the ultimate in flexibility, a feature that has now been further enhanced by new options. These options include a criss-crossed delivery, a back-stripping station, a PUR spine nozzle and the new Eurotrim 4000 three-knife trimmer.
All this means that postpress specialists can configure the machine to meet their own specific needs and add value by offering differentiated and specialized products that are tailored to customer requirements. The Eurobind 4000 is ideal for professional use and average run levels of approximately 10,000 copies.
The device processes paperbacks, magazines, annual reports and image brochures with a block (end-to-end) height of 140 to 450 millimeters (5.51 to 17.72 inches), a block width of 100 to 320 millimeters (3.94 to 12.60 inches), and a block thickness of two to 60 millimeters (0.079 to 2.36 inches).
