New Speedmaster CD 74 Brings Growth Surprises to Spartan Printing
Anticipating the arrival of its new eight-color Speedmaster CD 74 perfecting press from Heidelberg, Spartan Printing deployed extra sales representatives in early 2006 to determine whether they could handle expanding beyond Lansing into all of southern Michigan. According to Vice President of Business Development Randy Root, they need not have worried. “Because of the new equipment, we got an unexpected surprise - our productivity is so high that it allows us to sell jobs to other printers at a good price and still allow them to mark-up and make a profit,” said Root. Spartan Printing saw a 30 percent increase in sales in July 2006 as compared to July 2005, and a 25 percent increase in August after the installation of the new Speedmaster CD 74, which is the first Heidelberg long perfector to be installed in the U.S. in this format class. Spartan Printing has been able to reduce the number of people in its prepress department because of their new equipment, which also includes a Prosetter 74 MCL. Founded in 1970, Spartan Printing produces brochures, pocket folders, direct mailings, annual reports and catalogs for clients in the educational industry, trade associations, insurance companies and furniture manufacturers. This all-Heidelberg shop is family-owned and currently employs 35 workers. Spartan Printing performs all phases of printing in-house, and with their new Speedmaster CD 74, hopes to grow even more; possibly into the packaging sector.
