University of Tennessee In-plant Cuts Wide Swatch with New POLAR 78 X
The in-plant print shop at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, Tenn. recently installed a POLAR 78 X high-speed programmable cutter. Installed to replace an older cutter, the new POLAR “has improved the quality and squareness of the cut we achieve,” said in-plant director Gary Williford. “The operators like it because the knife changing is more efficient and it’s easier to program.” The University’s printing operation runs the new cutter six hours a day, five days a week, handling pre- and postpress trimming for the shop’s Heidelberg Printmaster QM 46, as well as digital copying equipment including a Heidelberg 9910 Digimaster and a NexPress color press. Also in the bindery area, a JDF-enabled 45” POLAR 115 X cutter is networked to the shop’s prepress workflow. The in-plant also operates a Speedmaster SM 102 4-color with perfector; a 36” SORDZ two-color; and a two-color Speedmaster SM 74. The University’s in-house printing and mail operation was established in 1948 and currently houses 55 employees.
