It's All in the Foil Embossing—2014 Gold Ink Entry
This Gold Ink entry titled "The Campari Cocktail Compendium" submitted by Team Concept in Carol Stream, IL, and entered into the Cookbooks category, combines old-fashioned style with some cool modern effects. The book celebrates Italian drink maker Gaspare Campari, and his son Davide, and the creation of the Campari apéritif in 1860, along with refreshing recipes.
Davide, an innovator and patron of the arts, is considered one of the founding fathers of advertising, incorporating art into the advertising of the company. The brand's iconic ruby red hue is featured throughout the pages of the book, in the images and fonts, which complement the cream-color pages that are made to look dated.
"The Campari Cocktail Compendium" was printed on a Komori Lithrone 528 sheetfed press for a press run of 1,000. A Kluge EHD foil stamping and embossing press was used to create the gold foil embossed cover—a fold over glued wrap around the cover was used to conceal the Double-0 wire binding. Satin Aqueous coating was also applied, and the paper used was Domtar's Cougar Opaque Smooth 100# Cover and 100# Text grades.
"The unique aspect of this piece is in the foil-embossed cover," said Roger Lauger, special projects manager at Team Concept. "The hairline registration and clean, fine detail of the foil makes this a spectacular use of foil embossing."
