All of this should be possible from a technical standpoint, but Romano also suggests the possibility of true openness conflicting with a vendor's marketing objectives. He's right in saying the industry has a questionable record when it comes to "standards"—formal or de facto. There is reason to hope for a better outcome this time, however.
