Jewish Newspaper Erases Clinton from Image
NEW YORK—The iconic photo of President Obama's brain trust agonizing through the live feed of the assault that led to the death of Osama bin Laden has been engraved in the public's mind since the May 2 mission took place. But apparently, one ethnic newspaper decided to provide a little revisionist history in order to stay faithful to its own laws.
Der Zeitung, an ultra-Orthodox Hasidic newspaper, published the photo with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and White House National Security team member Audrey Tomason removed from the image via Photoshop or other photo manipulation technology. The newspaper later apologized for the move, saying it only made the decision to remove the women to follow Jewish modesty laws. But many in the Jewish community have refuted the assertion, saying there is no law against publishing an image of normally clothed women. General reaction has painted the newspaper's action as misogynistic.
From a journalistic point of view, the doctoring of the photo was nothing short of treasonous. The caption on the official White House photo clearly states "the photograph may not be manipulated in any way."
