Müller Martini Showcases New Solutions for Book Production at Hunkeler Innovationdays 2025
At Hunkeler Innovationdays 2025, taking place Feb. 24-27 in Lucerne, Switzerland, Müller Martini will unveil several new all-in-one solutions for book production.
From the White Roll to the Finished Book
Working with Hunkeler, Müller Martini will showcase a complex all-in-one system for softcover products from the printing press to the trimming robot with a downstream sorting line. With the production of eight different books in the 3-up-rolls and 2-up-rolls process, the automated switching of book formats and cut-off lengths will be demonstrated live.
The system involves the following components:
- A digital high-performance HP Advantage 2200 web press running 244 meters per minute with a web width of up to 558 millimeters (22 inches).
- A Hunkeler Starbook Plowfolder with a productivity of up to 2,000 individual books or stacks per hour.
- A Vareo PRO perfect binder with cover ejection (in the rare event that the covers coming from an HP Indigo and the contents don’t match).
- A drying path.
- An InfiniTrim trimming robot.
- And a sorting line, where the finished books are output sorted and in stacks.
“What truly sets our all-in-one system apart from the competition,” emphasizes Marco Kunz, Product Manager at Hunkeler, “is that each of the three sub-solutions (printing press/Starbook Plowfolder/Vareo PRO with InfiniTrim) can change over to a new job extremely fast, and is highly flexible in terms of format and material.”
Inline From the White Signature to the Finished Softcover Book
Müller Martini, Heidelberg, and Hunkeler will present an all-in-one inline system from the sheet-fed press, to the sheet folder, perfect binder, drying path and trimming robot, all the way to the sorting line as a world premiere.
The solution is made of:
- A Jetfire 50, the ultra-flexible and reliable all-rounder digital printing press from Heidelberg that can print both signatures and covers, also predestined for additional print products such as direct mailings and flyers.
- A Starbook Sheetfolder, the latest innovation from Hunkeler for book block production, developed specifically for the cut sheet segment.
- A Vareo PRO perfect binder with cover ejection (in the rare event that the covers and the contents don’t match).
- A customer-specific drying path.
- An InfiniTrim trimming robot.
- And a sorting line, where the finished books are output sorted and in stacks.
PDF In, Magazine Out
Once again partnering with Hunkeler and Heidelberg, Müller Martini will present an all-in-one solution for digital saddle stitching, with the system marked as a “PDF in, magazine out” solution.
“As we learned in many conversations at drupa in Düsseldorf and at PRINTING United in Las Vegas last year, our customers are relying increasingly on digital saddle stitching,” says Adrian Mayr. For the product manager at Müller Martini, this is first and foremost due to great progress in digital printing technology, progress that provides far more possibilities than ever before. Now, graphics companies can produce not just classic magazines but a broad spectrum of other products such as business reports; bank, insurance, and health documents; and documents for education and elections. These often feature different content and in some cases are also personalized.
The line consists of a Hunkeler UW8 unwinder, a Hunkeler CS8 sheeter, a Heidelberg buckle-plate folding unit, a Prinova digital saddle stitcher, and a Perfetto PRO compensating stacker.
Demos for all three systems will be done at the Müller Martini booth.
