Newly Merged Perry Judd's Plans Expansion
Waterloo, WI—Just months after consolidating Perry Graphic Communications with Judd's Inc., the newly titled Perry Judd's is expanding its operations. This month hails the opening of a digital prepress center in Madison, WI, as well as the expansion of press and bindery capabilities at several manufacturing sites.
Perry Judd's has announced a $25 million expansion of press and bindery equipment at three of its printing plants. A Heidelberg Harris M-3000 "Sunday" press will be installed at the Baraboo catalog plant along with three high-speed bindery lines at the Waterloo and Strasburg, VA, publication plants. These installations will be completed in various stages by summer.
The new 7,000-square-foot Madison prepress facility, fully operational as of April 1, will support front-end work for the company's Baraboo and Waterloo, WI, printing plants. Press Manager Ed Bacsik explains, "We'll do all of the preflighting here, then transmit full flat files to Waterloo and Baraboo for printing around the clock, seven days a week."
Housing all facets of desktop publishing, including color scanning, page makeup, electronic imposition and file preflight capabilities, the new center will also meet the digital archiving needs of Perry Judd's publishing and catalog customers.
In addition to expanding capacity, this facility allows the company to consolidate activity. "By combining all prepress work, we have the ability to create a network hub," adds Eric Sullivan, director of marketing,
With 35 hourly and 10 salaried employees, the goal of this 24-hour facility is to provide quality service—fast. To support that mission, Perry Judd's gladly offers assistance to clients who want to make the transition to CTP, providing consultation and even training. "This makes things easier for us in the long run," contends Bacsik, "because it means fewer mistakes sent to us."
He goes on to say, "We want to do things correctly and we also want to cut down on the waiting time for the customer."
Perry Judd's is one of the top 10 publication and catalog printers. Its customers include, among others, J.C. Penney's, Fingerhut, Carol Wright Gifts, Time Inc., McGraw-Hill and the American Medical Association.
