OnDemand Exhibitors Team Up to Enable Free Book Donations

NEW YORK CITY--In exchange for filling out a short online form, graphic arts professionals are being given the opportunity to participate in a program that will donate free books to New York City schools. Six industry companies are teaming up to produce three titles on the show floor of the upcoming OnDemand Printing and Publishing Expo, scheduled to run from April 7-9, 2003 at the Jacob Javits Center.

The soft-cover books will be produced on an integrated, on-demand system operating live at the Delphax booth (#3335). A Delphax CR1300P high-speed digital web press will handle printing of the black-and-white book blocks, which will be finished by a Muller Martini AmigoDigital perfect binding system. The production system also will incorporate a Stralfors unwider, material handling systems from Shuttleworth, Inc. and an Amatco trimmer. Boise Paper Solutions will donate the paper.

The system is expected to produce three classic works of fiction at the rate of about six, 400-page books per minute. The titles include: "The Last of the Mohicans" by James Fenimore Cooper, "Little Women" by Louisa May Alcott, and "Homer's The Odyssey".

In commenting on the program, Dr. Askia Davis, superintendent for the New York City Department of Education's Office of Strategic Partnerships, said: "These three classics are timeless. The characters and challenges that they bring to life will remain vivid in the minds of our students as each continues to discover and master his/her own character and challenges. I extend the New York City Department of Education's deepest expression of appreciation."
