Transcontinental Closing Down Boucherville Plant

MONTREAL—Transcontinental announced that it is closing the Boucherville printing plant before the end of the year. The closure, scheduled for Dec. 17, will result in the loss of 180 employees.

Jacques Grégoire, senior vice president, magazine, book and catalog group, said the company needed to make the tough call on Boucherville in order to remain competitive in a changing market.

"Over the past several years, Transcontinental has invested heavily in new printing technologies that have made it significantly more efficient and augmented its production capacity," Grégoire noted. "Today, because of the major structural changes in the printing industry that have led to decreased demand in certain niche markets, Transcontinental is faced with overcapacity in the book, catalog and magazine segment of its print network."
